Kyle Kendall's favorite sport is baseball, but he seems to have a knack for catching trophy pike.
Last summer, he caught a big one at the sand wash, which his parents had mounted. This weekend, he landed a 35.5-inch, 10-pound pike.

Notre Dame's track team picked up eight titles in yesterday's Section V meet at Wheatland-Chili.

Two home-field pitchers, two dominant performances, a pair of very similar results for Batavia and Notre Dame in Section V playoff games at Dwyer Stadium on Friday.
Behind the 15-K, two-hit performance of Zach Hale, the Blue Devils shutdown Newark 1-0.
In the night cap, Alec Covel was just as masterful for the Fighting Irish. In the process of striking out 10, Covel gave up only one hit, and that wasn't until the top of the 6th inning, leading Notre Dame to a 2-0 victory over Alfred-Almond.
Batavia Head Coach Rick Saunders said Hale pitched the game of the year.
"What a performance," Saunders said. "The whole game is Hale. He got the base hit, and then I pinch run for him, and he's the winning run."
Mike Rapone, head coach of Notre Dame, was just as impressed with the performance of Covel, who started only three games this season prior to Friday because of an injury. Both Rapone and Covel said he came into the game, fresh, strong and eager to pitch.
"He threw only 78 pitches," Rapone said. "He was pounding the strike zone. His curve ball was sharp. He's a great player. He really is."
Both Newark and Alfred are lower seed games, but in sectionals top-ranked teams are going find themselves going against the best pitcher of their opponents.
"Their kid pitch great, too," Rapone said. "That's the thing with sectionals. They've got a .500 record, but they probably won every game that he pitched and maybe they lost all the ones he didn't, so you never know what you're going to run into when you get into sectional tournament. I mean, for a nine seed, heck, that kid threw the ball well."
Saunders was equally impressed with Newark's starter.
"i don't know anything about their pitcher, but I'll tell you, he is quality," Saunders said. "He threw a real nice fastball and a sweet curve ball."
Batavia was limited to four hits, but still managed to get a couple of runners to third. It made Saunders a little nervous when his offense couldn't close the deal.
"We had our chances," Saunders said. "Those games bother me more than anything, when we see guys on third base many times, one out, and you don't score, you go 'oh-oh, something bad can happen.' Nothing bad happened because Hale was in control of the game."
Being out on the mound in a big 1-0 game is exactly where he wanted to be, Hale said.
"I usually throw better later, but especially after we got that run," Hale said. "It really gave me a boost. I'm like, hey, better close it out.
"The rush is crazy," he added. "When you're out there every batter means something. It's not like it's a 10-0 game."
Covel said he just likes to be in that commanding situation, taking control of the game.
"All of my pitches working and with the strong defense behind me, it just gives me all the confidence in the world," Covel said.

On May 18 and 19, Genesee Storm 14-U Girls Softball Team played its first tournament, the 2013 Orchard Park Softball Tournament. The team was formed in 2012.
The tournament was played at Brush Mountain Park in Orchard Park. The girls won all three of their games on Saturday, beating Oakville (Canada) 12-3, Evans Storm 10-8, and the Cheektowaga Crabapples 10-2.
Their winning streak continued through the semifinals game Sunday, beating the West Seneca Dazzlers 14-7.
The championship game was a hard fought defensive battle with the Genesee Storm leading the powerhouse Lancaster Heat after 4 innings 3-1. A few well-placed hits by the Heat ended the game 6-3, handing the Storm its first loss and second place in the tournament.

The Dwyer Stadium Box Office opens for the 2013 season at 9 a.m. Monday, May 20. Tickets for Opening Day and ALL regular season games for the 2013 season will be on sale. The box office will be open until 5 p.m.
Normal box office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Fans interested in season tickets can also stop by the stadium and pick out their seat for the 2013 season.
The Muckdogs open their 2013 home schedule on Tuesday, June 18th vs. the Auburn Doubledays at 7:05 p.m.
The Batavia Muckdogs, Genesee County’s only professional sports franchise, have also released their 2013 slogan of "Muckdogs Magic." Part of this magic is the new and improved promotional schedule featuring fireworks, giveaways, special events, and daily promotions.

The Batavia Muckdogs are the short-season, Class A affiliate of the Miami Marlins and are the last remaining founding member of the New York-Penn League, dating back to 1939. The Batavia Muckdogs are operated by the neighboring Rochester Red Wings.
The Notre Dame girls softball team closed out the season Friday with a come-from-behind victory over Lyndonville in game played at GCC.
As the defending state champions, the Fighting Irish finish out the season with a 10-8 record, which is good enough to make it to the first round of sectional play, but Head Coach Rick Mancuso said the team still needs to eliminate some mistakes to advance further.
"We're getting better," Mancuso said. "The girls are working really hard. We're not probably where we want to be, but we'll see what happens. We'll throw our hat out there and see how it goes."
Friday's game was a seesaw battle, with Notre Dame and Lyndonville exchange the lead just about every inning.
Going into the bottom of the seventh, down 10-9, the Irish needed to string some hits together and plate two runs to pull out a victory.
The team was loose and confident at the start of the inning and got the job done to notch an 11-10 victory.
"The girls did a great job of rallying back any time we got down," Mancuso said. "They showed a lot of character today."

The Lyndonville Tigers, a semi-pro football team that plays all of its home games at Pembroke Town Park, will hold a scrimmage at 3 p.m. tomorrow and is inviting local football fans out to the park to see the team.
The event is free.
Players 18 and older are also encouraged to come out and learn more about the team.
The Tigers are entering their third season playing in Pembroke and the team is 10 years old. The NFA has 16 teams.
"We have a great returning roster but are always looking for new players and I think our pre-season scrimmage is a great way for interested parties to come feel out the team," said Taylor McCabe, president of football operations for the Tigers.

The Gasser Racing Series begins at 1 p.m. Satruday, May 18, at Empire Dragway, 2011 New Road in Leicester. This is a fantastic group of adults, many senior citizens, who race antique and vintage cars from the 1930s to the 1960s.
The Genesee Community College golf team took fifth place at the Region III Tournament hosted by Mohawk Valley Community College on May 13-14.
The Cougars were in third place after day one and fell to fifth after the final round.
Adam Baumeister (78/83), Alec Engel (83/84), Trevor Leach (85/86) and Andrew Steinbrenner (93/98) combined to shoot a 690 during the two-day event which was won by Monroe Community College (635). Jamestown Community College (644), Onondaga Community College (668) and Jefferson Community College (684) rounded out the top-five teams.
In addition to being named to the All-Region team, Baumeister, along with Engel, has qualified to participate in the NJCAA National Tournament which will be held at the Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautaqua, NY. The tournament will run from June 4-7.
Leach, who missed the cut for the national tournament by two strokes, will be first alternate.

Hannah Bowen had three hits, inclduing two doubles, and three RBIs to help Batavia crush East Irondequoit 12-4 in girls softball.
Kimberly Walsh went the distance, giving up only two earned runs and striking out eight.
Kayleight Tourt also had three hits, including a triple.
Alyssa Joe Baiocco, and Halston Wiseley had two hits apiece.
GARDEN CITY: No.2 Genesee Community College was unable to get by No.3 Nassau Community College in the NJCAA National Men’s Lacrosse Final Four Semifinals on Saturday afternoon, falling by a final score of 15-6 and bringing the Cougars’ season to an end.
Genesee got on the board first after Tyler Skowronski scored just over three-minutes in to give GCC a 1-0 lead. Nassau tied it three minutes later and then converted on the man-up with a goal at the 8:03 mark to take a 2-1 lead. The Lions scored two more times before the end of the opening period and led 4-1 after one.
Nassau upped its lead to 5-1 less than thirty-seconds into the second quarter and made it 6-1 at the 3:32 mark before the game was delayed nearly an hour due to weather.
After the restart, Nassau took advantage of another man-up situation and scored with eight-minutes remaining in the half to take a 7-1 lead. Genesee had a chance to cut into the deficit late in the second quarter, but could not capitalize on a three-man advantage. Nassau scored two more times before the end of the half and led 9-1 at the break.
Blake Hurt broke a nearly 27-minute scoring drought for GCC with a goal just 40-seconds into the second half to get the Cougars to within 9-2. Nassau answered quickly to make it 10-2 and then scored with a two-man advantage to increase its lead to 11-2. Hurt scored again for GCC with just over a minute left in the third and the Cougars trailed 11-3 going into the fourth quarter.
Nassau struck twice early in the fourth, including another goal with a two-man advantage, before Chris Rabung got a man-up goal for GCC to make it 14-4. Saxon Weil and Christian Reiller followed with a goal each for Genesee to get the Cougars to within 14-6, but Nassau finished the scoring with a goal at the 2:56 mark and ended GCC’s season with a nine-goal victory.
Brady Lawrence made 14 saves in net for GCC on the afternoon. Of GCC’s 27 shots, 15 were on net.
The Cougars were successful two out of eight times with the man advantage in the game and allowed five man-up goals to Nassau.
Genesee ends the season with a 15-3 overall record.
Batavia girls softball picked up a win against Pembroke, 10-4, but dropped a game to Alden 10-3 in recent action.
In the game against Pembroke, Kayleigh Tourt had two hits and four RBIs while Hannah Bowen had two hits and two RBIs.
Kimberly Walsh pitched all seven, struck out 6 and gave up seven hits and two earned runs.
Against Alden, Bowen had two hits, Taylor Stefaniak had two hits and Briana Janes had two hits.
Two Batavia-area athletes competing for Fredonia State made strong showings this past week at the SUNYAC Outdoor Track & Field championship meet at SUNY Cortland.
Eric Williams won the 110-meter high hurdle title and Max Radley finished second in the men's hammer throw.
Williams, a freshman, won with a time of 14.70 seconds.
Radley's best toss measured 52.34 meters. Radley is a senior.
Fredonia is a Division III NCAA school.
Adam Baumeister shot a one-under 71 to claim first place medalist honors and the Genesee Community College golf team took second place in the GCC Invite on Saturday afternoon at the Batavia Country Club.
GCC individual scores: Trevor Leach 79, Andrew Steinbrenner 80, Alec Engel 82, Gary Neth 87 and Max Sallade 91.
Monroe Community College finished first as a team with a combined score of 303. Genesee tallied a team score of 312 and tied with Onondaga Community College for second place overall. Adirondack Community College finished fourth with a team score of 316 followed by Jefferson Community College (325), Mohawk Valley Community College (327), Tompkins-Cortland Community College (338), Cayuga Community College (338), Niagara County Community College (360) and Mercyhurst North East (410).

It was a long day of baseball at Dwyer Stadium Saturday as offense dominated in all four games leading up to a 19-1 tournament championship win for the Batavia Blue Devils over the pitch-weary Oakfield-Alabama Hornets.
This was the 15th year for tournament, sponsored by the Batavia Rotary Club.
To reach the finals, Batavia beat Attica 8-6 and O-A beat Notre Dame 10-9, erasing a 7-0 deficit for the comeback victory.
In the consolation game, Attica downed the Irish 14-10 in a game punctuated by numerous complaints about the ball-strike calling of the home plate umpire.
Zach Hale was named tournament MVP after fanning 15 in the nightcap.
And nightcap it was. The game was scheduled to start at 7 p.m., but with the high-scoring games prior to the championship game, the Blue Devils and Hornets didn't take the field until 8:15 p.m.

Malik Mitchell threw a complete game for the third-seeded Genesee Community College baseball team in the Region III Division II tournament opener, helping the Cougars defeat #2 Mercyhurst North East, 9-1.
Mercyhurst took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning. The Cougars came back to tie it with a run in the fourth and then took the lead after Zack Ranta hit a bases loaded double that scored two to give GCC a 3-1 lead. Genesee added another run in the fifth and added five more unanswered runs to defeat the Saints via the eight-run mercy rule after seven innings.
Brandon Collins hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and drove in a run in the seventh on a double to help extend the lead. Jacob Sojda, Ramon Vega, and Jacob Kenney also drove in runs for the Cougars in the final inning.
In game two, Genesee managed just six hits off of top-seeded Monroe Community College's starting pitcher Dylan Sheffer, who went the distance and did not allow a run.
Collins and Ranta each collected two hits and Fauchedre Celestijn and Alex Lyons each went 1-3.
Monroe scored five runs in the second inning and twice in the sixth and tallied 11 hits in the game.
Ranta started the game on the mound and went five innings allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits and struck out three. Ryan DiMartino threw the final three innings and allowed two earned runs on two hits and struck out one.
Genesee (1-1) will face elimination on Saturday at 4 p.m. Monroe CC (1-0) will play Mercyhurst NE (0-1) at 12 p.m. If Monroe wins, Mercyhurst NE will be eliminated from the tournament. If Mercyhurst NE wins, they will play Genesee for the right to play for the Region III Division II tournament title.
In a tune-up before this weekend's Region III Tournament, the Genesee Community College baseball team hosted Lackawanna College on Wednesday afternoon in a final regular season doubleheader. The Cougars lost the first game 14-2 but came back to win in walk-off fashion in game two, 9-8.
Brandon Collins hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first, but Genesee surrendered two runs to Lackawanna in the top of the inning to fall behind.
GCC used a total of four pitchers in game one and allowed 14 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits.
Collins doubled in the fourth and scored on an RBI single by Josh Maier, but that was the extent of the Cougars offense in game one.
In game two, Lackawanna again put two runs on the board in the top of the first to take an early lead.
Ryan DiMartino singled with one out in the second inning and then scored on a triple by Jacob Sodja to cut Lackawanna's lead in half.
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Fauchedre Celestijn delivered an RBI single that scored Jacob Kenney to get GCC to within 3-2. Manny Garcia added a sacrifice fly later in the inning to tie the game at 3-3.
Lackawanna responded in the top of the seventh with five runs to take an 8-3 lead.
The Cougars loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and cut the Lackawanna lead in half after Celestijn was hit by a pitch, allowing Maier to score. Garcia then stepped to the plate and hit a game-tying grand slam out to left, notching the score at 8-8. The Cougars kept the rally going and loaded the bases again, before Jose Diaz was hit by a pitch, scoring Collins to give Genesee a 9-8 walk-off win.
The Cougars finish the regular season 21-11 and will now turn their sights on the Region III Tournament which will begin on Friday afternoon at Monroe Community College.
Kimberly Walsh tossed a complete game shutout Tuesday against Gates Chili leading Batavia's girls softball team to a 7-0 victory.
Walsh also had three hits and RBI to help contribute to the win.
Breanna Hurlbut and Kayleigh Tourt each had three hits and collecting two hits each were Taylor Stefaniak, Elizabeth Myers and Hannah Bowen.
Myers and Teiona Kemp each scored two runs.
