Madison LaGrou, Oakfield-Alabama Hornets, tossed a no-hitter yesterday in softball on her way to striking out her 400th hitter during her high school career.
The Hornets beat the Pembroke Dragons, 5-0.

St. Joseph Catholic School held its annual Lil Irish Basketball Banquet on Thursday, April 26, to honor those students that participated this year.

Yesterday morning, players and coaches in the Oakfield-Alabama Little League didn't let a bit of rain dampen their enthusiasm for opening day of the baseball season as they marched down Main Street through the Village on their way to the baseball fields off Drake Street.
Batavia High School Boys Baseball Team celebrates a big fourth inning, six-run lead to beat visiting Greece Olympia by a score of 9-1 at Genesee Community College, Batavia, Thursday afternoon.
Senior Jordyn Schmidt (pictured below) picked up the win on the mound allowing two hits, one run and six strikeouts for the Blue Devils.
Brandon Betances, Chandler Baker and Andrew Frances got hits for Batavia as the Devils remain undefeated with three wins and are 3-1 overall on the year.
Next game will be home on Saturday vs. Pittsford Sutherland at GCC.

The Batavia/Genesee Police and Fire Hockey Team participated in the third annual 2018 Police and Fire Ice Hockey Tournament in Buffalo this past weekend.
Twenty teams participated in the tourney, coming to Buffalo from as far south as South Carolina, and as far north as London, Ontario, Canada.
It was another enjoyable, face-paced weekend for our local boys, who played against teams from Canada, Erie County, and Homeland Security.
All our thanks to those who came out and cheered us on! The team was once again sponsored this year by Ken’s Charcoal Pits & BBQ, with many thanks going to Ken Mistler.
Batavia Blue Devils boys and girls track and field team defeated Greece Odyssey yesterday at vandetta stadium Batavia. Boys team won by an impressive 134-7 and girls team 119-21. Top finishers are posted below.
There were many second- and third-place finishers for the squad also. Batavia boys record is 2-0 and girls are 1-1 in their division.
Batavia’s home invitational will be at Vandetta stadium starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday May 12.

Sophomore Irelyn Curry (pictured above) tossed a complete game, scattering eight hits, while striking out five on the mound to pick up her first varsity win as Batavia defeated Greece Athena 8-4.
Maiya Reinhart and Alaina Bowman each were 2 for 4 at the plate. Bottom of the first was the turning point in the game as senior Bri Janes and freshman Mackenzie Reigle both doubled and drove in two runs for the Devils. Natalie Rogers also singled and doubled for Batavia. Taylor Stefaniak was 1-3 at the plate and led a strong defensive effort for Batavia. Batavia improves their record to 2-2.
Head Coach Jim Fazio summarized the win after the game, "Very proud of how our team responded after Athena put four runs on the board in the first inning to take an early lead.
"Irelyn was outstanding in the circle and the girls rallied behind her defensively. We answered their early offensive explosion with seven runs of our own. Our pitching and defense carried us the rest of the game."
In a close non-league golf matchup Batavia Blue Devils beat Elba Central Lancers 263-270 at Batavia Country Club yesterday. Teagan Monahan and Bryce Reigel scored a 49 to lead the Devils, while Elba's Ben Pflaumer scored a 44 for Elba.

Nominees are sought for the Batavia Blue Devils Athletic Hall of Fame. Nomination deadline is May 16.
The purpose is to recognize players, coaches and administrators who have attained a high degree of success in Batavia High School Athletics.
To nominate an individual you should either fill out the nomination form located under Athletics/Hall of Fame at www.bataviacsd.org or contact the Batavia High School Athletic Office at (585) 343 - 2480, ext. 2003.
CRITERIA:
1. The Hall of Fame will recognize outstanding athletes, coaches, administrators and significant contributors. These might include worthy booster club presidents, parent volunteers, team doctors and other individuals who have contributed significantly to our athletic program.
2. Athletes will become eligible five years after graduation and coaches five years after retirement from coaching. The same time frame will be used for significant others.
3. The nominee must have made an outstanding contribution to his or her sport. Typically this would be attaining All County or All State honors, all-time leading scorer, winning a state championship, etc.. The nominee must have exemplified character while representing Batavia Athletics and also in his/her lives following graduation. He/she must be a positive role model, worthy of being emulated by current and future students.
4. A member must continue to be a positive role model or they may be removed.
Bad weather is delaying the start of field repairs at Dwyer Stadium according to Muckdogs General Manager Dave Chase while other preparations for the 2018 New York Penn League season, which opens June 18, remains a work-in-progress.

Today, new computers should arrive. Wi-Fi, with broadband from Empire Access, is working.
Ticket sales should begin around May 1.
Chase said staff has been working with Wilson Sporting Goods on new uniform jerseys (one red and one black).
Currently, field work is scheduled to begin Monday, provided there is a solid break in the weather, and should be completed in five to seven working days.
Anthony "Butchie" Ray, who starred in football and track and field over the past four years at Batavia High School, has accepted a scholarship offer from University at Buffalo.
UB is a Division 1 school so it's a chance to compete at the highest level in collegiate athletics.
"Getting a scholarship from a Division I school is amazing," Ray said. "I never dreamt of going to a Division I school."
During his athletic career at BHS, Ray was a member of seven teams that won sectional titles and he won 10 individual sectional titles in track and field.
Six times he was named to a Greater All Rochester team in either football or track.
The Bulls recruited Ray to be part of the track team where he'll throw discus and shot put.
While Brockport isn't Division I, Ray could have played football there, so it was a tough decision, said Ray, who was part of three Section V title teams in football with the Blue Devils.
UB, he decided, was where he felt comfortable.
"I liked the school and the facilities," he said. "I liked the atmosphere. When I thought about it a second I thought, 'like, wow, a Division I school. That's crazy. I'll get to go where some of the greats go.' "

Registration is now open for the third annual Cougar Classic Scholarship Scramble scheduled for Monday, July 23, at the Stafford Country Club, 8873 Morganville Road (Route 237) in Stafford.
The Cougar Classic Scholarship Scramble allows up to 36 foursomes for the 18-hole event at the esteemed Stafford Country Club. Sign-in starts 11:30 a.m. with lunch available, and golfers tee off in "shotgun" style at 12:30 p.m.
Registration is $125 per golfer and includes 18 holes of golf, a golf cart, all beer and nonalcoholic beverages during play, lunch and dinner with a cash bar, and much more!
To join the event for dinner only is $25.
Most importantly, all proceeds go directly to GCC Student Scholarship Program, making higher education possible for deserving students in our community.

The Batavia “Babes on Blades” women’s senior hockey team finished off a strong season this year by competing in and winning the local annual Scottsville women’s senior hockey tournament last weekend.
In the first game, the Babes were down 5 to 3 in the second period before rallying to win 7 to 6. The second game against the host Scottsville team was a defensive battle with the Babes scoring the first goal of the game with 3 minutes left in the third period. The Babes scored an open net goal at the end of the game for a 2 to 0 win. In the third game, the Babes team’s offense exploded for 9 goals in a 9 to 2 win over Brockport.
The championship game ended up with a rematch against the host Scottsville team again. the Babes team scored early in the game and were able to maintain the lead throughout the hard-fought game for a 4 to 2 win.

The Class-A Short-Season New York-Penn League and its member clubs are proud to announce that the league's philanthropic arm, the NYPL Charitable Foundation, will once again award more than $10,000 in scholarships this summer to deserving high school graduates from the league's 14 markets.
Now in its 10th year, the 2018 NYPL Scholarship Contest is open to any graduating senior from a public or private high school within the league's footprint. Any student who has been accepted at a two- or four-year college or university, vocational school, or technical education institution is eligible.
Applicants will be judged based on academic performance, volunteer and extracurricular activities, and the impact their local NYPL club and Minor League Baseball have had on their lives.
The scholarship contest will consist of two stages -- a local round and a league round. In the local stage, students will apply directly to their local NYPL team, with one applicant chosen by each of the 14 teams to advance to the league/final round. The 14 finalists will then be judged by league representatives.
Three applicants will be selected to receive the top prize of a $2,500 scholarship. All other finalists will receive a $250 book award.
“The New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation and our 14 member clubs are pleased to have the opportunity to assist outstanding high school seniors within our league’s footprint for the tenth consecutive season,” said Ben J. Hayes, president of the New York-Penn League.
“This program will again recognize those seniors who not only meet and exceed traditional scholarship criteria, but demonstrate the positive community impact and lifelong memories fostered by their local NYPL clubs throughout the year.”
High school seniors interested in entering the 2018 Scholarship Contest can obtain the official application from their local NYPL club, or by visiting the league's official website, NewYork-PennLeague.com.
The deadline to submit applications to the nearest NYPL team is June 4. Each club's winner, including the three $2,500 scholarship recipients, will be selected in mid-July.
Medina’s Ryleigh Culver is well on his way to becoming the next “young phenom” on the Genesee Region USBC bowling scene.
The 10-year-old right-hander placed first in the Boys U12 division at the New York State Region 2 Pepsi USBC Youth Championships last weekend at AMF Dewey Garden Lanes in Rochester, and now will head to King Pin Lanes in Rome on May 19 to compete for a state title.
Ryleigh posted games of 262, 201 and 210 for a 673 series to top the list of 32 boys who participated in his division. He had it going right from the start, rolling the first eight strikes in the opening game.
“He’s been practicing a lot and we work with him on his game,” said his dad, Richard Culver II, noting that Ryleigh’s grandfather, Rich, also is a big part of Ryleigh’s success.
The practice definitely is paying off as Ryleigh has upped his average to 176, a remarkable number for a 10-year-old.
Several other area youngsters fared well at the tournament.
Batavian Jacey Wagner, daughter of standout bowler Rich Wagner, placed second in the Girls U8 division to earn a scholarship.
In Girls U12, Lorelei Sanders of Medina and Allie Faryna of Perry placed third and fourth, respectively, while in the Boys U20 division, Dennis Van Duser of Perry placed 11th with a 664 series and Trevor O’Dell of Oakfield was 13th with a 654 series.
The Pepsi Youth tournament is a totally scratch event (no handicap) with the top two in the U8 and U10 divisions winning scholarships at the regional level, and the top two in the U12, U15 and U20 divisions moving on to the state finals where they will compete for seven scholarships in each of the categories.
Batavian Ron Lawrence, bowling in his first 60-and-Over Tour event, took top honors on April 8 at Oak Orchard Bowl in Albion, defeating veteran Fran Bax of Niagara Falls, 226-223, in the championship match.
“I surprised myself, that’s for sure,” said Lawrence, speaking with a sense of amazement that he was able to come through in the clutch to knock off Bax, one of the area’s most prolific bowlers over the past five decades.
Lawrence, needing two strikes and eight pins in the 10th frame to win the match, packed the 1-3 pocket for three straight strikes to claim the $325 first prize.
He said that he believed an open frame in the eighth frame was going to cost him.
“I missed the 4-pin in the eighth frame and I thought it would beat me for sure,” he said.
Lawrence, a longtime groundskeeper and maintenance man at Stafford Country Club, has had recent success at Oak Orchard Bowl. Earlier this season, he was part of the winning team in a no-tap tournament there.
A 195 average bowler, Lawrence competes in the North Pole League at Mancuso Bowling Center and is a substitute in a league at Le Roy Legion Lanes.
Lawrence qualified sixth with 642 (the top 10 scores plus six age group leaders advanced), and then registered 219 and 246 to make it to the four-man step-ladder finals.
Forty-seven bowlers entered the tournament, which featured step-ladder finals for the first time in its three-year existence. And the final round didn’t lack for excitement, either, as all three matches were decided in the 10th frame.
In the opener, John Danielewicz of Sanborn nipped Charlie Gfeller of Rochester, 226-225. After that, Lawrence defeated Danielewicz, 204-196, to set up the title match against the top-seeded Bax.
Bax won $200 for his runner-up finish while Danielewicz pocketed $175 and Gfeller $150.
Bill Logan of Albion rolled his first USBC-certified 300 game in the last game of qualifying to post a 683 series, which was second behind North Tonawanda’s Dennis Illig, who fired 718.
Two other Genesee Region members joined Logan as “cashers” – Bob Hodgson of Medina and Kevin Gray Sr. of Honeoye Falls.

Ryan Naylor of Perry and Jason Quilliam of Batavia recorded 300 games in league action last week at Perry Bowling Center and Mancuso Bowling Center, respectively. It was Naylor’s first USBC-certified perfect game and Quilliam’s second.
Naylor reached perfection in the second game of the Thursday Night League, and finished with a 645 series. The 24-year-old righty averages about 200 in three leagues at Perry Bowling Center.
Recalling the 10th frame, Naylor said he wasn’t too nervous and felt more confident after getting the first strike on lanes 1-2.
“I knew after the first one that I was going to do it,” he said. “The first two were beautiful; the last one I got out by about two boards and it hit light but carried.”
A member of the Carpenter’s Union Local 276, Naylor said he was used a Storm Code Black bowling ball drilled by Brian Weber to eclipse his previous high game of 279.
Quilliam, a 38-year-old right-hander, posted his 300 in the first game of a 714 series in the Antique World Tuesday Coed League. His previous perfect game came in December 2011 and he bowled an 805 series in November 2016.
At the USBC Open Championships in Syracuse, Quilliam was part of the Rich Wagner Team that put up a 2,678 three-game series – not a bad score considering the brutally-tough lane conditions.
Team members Nate Wright and Rich Wagner had 632 and 706 series, respectively, in the Singles event.
-- Medina Lanes is hosting a five-person Baker-style handicap tournament this Sunday, with $1,000 guaranteed for first place and $500 guaranteed for second place.
Squad times are at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Competition consists of 10 Baker-style games (bowlers alternate frames), followed by match play finals.
The entry fee is $125 per team. Handicap is based on 90 percent of the difference in the team average and 1,050, with 1,050 being the maximum.
-- A “job well done” goes out to Joe Czworka, who is retiring after 33 years as a league secretary. Joe said he is stepping down after closing the books on the Antique World Tuesday Coed League at Mancuso Bowling Center.
-- The Genesee Region USBC announced that prize checks from its association tournament will be going out early next week.
More than $6,600 in prize money will be going out to 73 cashers in the Team, Doubles, Singles and All-Events competition.
GRUSBC President Tom Fluker also reminds all league secretaries to submit their final average sheets to the association office at 55 Edgewood Drive, Batavia, NY 14020 as soon as possible, and to make their reservations by May 1st for the Annual Meeting and Hall of Fame Dinner on May 12 at Batavia Downs.

Batavia -- James E. Boyd, age 83, of Batavia, New York, died peacefully Thursday April 5, 2018 at the Northgate Health Care Facility in North Tonawanda.
Widely known as "Gentleman Jim," Boyd took over the Batavia Downs track announcing duties from the legendary Max Robinson in 1984 and continued to call races there until it closed in 1996. He was also the announcer at Buffalo Raceway and called races at Finger Lakes racetrack.
Boyd called the richest race ever held at Batavia Downs, the $268,756 Breeders Crown aged-mare trot in 1988 won by Armbro Flori and also Getting Personal’s 1:53.3 track record in 1993.
“Jim was known for a very steady voice and very accurate calls,” Todd Haight, director/GM of Racing at Batavia Downs said. “Even though it’s been over 20 years since his retirement, our old-timers still ask about him.”
Besides calling the races, Jim was also a salesman in the Buffalo area for many years.
Boyd was born in Batavia, the son of the late Harry S. and Marjorie (Price) Boyd and was also preceded in death by his wife Josephine (Nevin) Boyd and siblings, Raymond, Robert, Ronald "Don" and Harry "Jack" Boyd.
He was a graduate of Batavia High School and Alfred State College and served honorably in the Army during the Korean conflict. Upon returning home he became a member of the Glenn S. Loomis Post #332 of the American Legion in Batavia and rose to the position of Post Commander.
Boyd is survived by his beloved daughter, Deborah (William) Evans, of Nevada, dear friends, Paula (Frederick) Leigh, of Batavia, along with many nieces and nephews.
The family will be present from 10 - 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12, 2018 at the Michael S. Tomaszewski Funeral & Cremation Chapel LLC located at 4120 W. Main Street Road, Batavia, New York 14020 where his Funeral Services will be celebrated at 11 a.m. by Jim's nephew, Rev. David Boyd.
He will be lain to rest alongside his beloved wife in Grand View Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his memory are suggested to Volunteers for Animals of Genesee County.

The team raised $3,000 during a Bat-a-thon fundraising event called "Strike Out Cancer" on March 24th at Batavia High School. It was a priority this season as a way to contribute to a local charity.
"This was something our team and program wanted to do to make a difference in our community," said first-year Coach Jim Fazio. "Our girls went above and beyond in all of our fundraising efforts and this seemed like a perfect place to show our support."
