A first-year travel cheer team from Pembroke, aged 9 to 13, have competed in a total of four competitions and won first place in all four.

Kelly Abramski, one of four coaches for the teams, said the project began with cheerleaders from the Pembroke Youth Association football team and that the girls worked hard all winter.

"The big news here is our little squad from Pembroke is traveling all the way to Virginia Beach to compete in the nationals this weekend," Abramski said.

East Pembroke Fire responded to a report of a one-vehicle accident at 5:49 p.m. today on Route 5 in Pembroke.

A blue Chevrolet pickup struck a utility pole and then crossed the highway coming to rest on the opposite shoulder. 

The driver may have suffered a medical incident, according to East Pembroke Fire Chief Don Newton. The driver was transported to ECMC by Mercy EMS for treatment and evaluation. The name of the patient has not been released.

Corfu Fire assisted with traffic control. Westbound traffic was shut down between Boyce Road and Indian Falls Road due to low primary wires hanging low over the highway, Newton said.

East Pembroke remains on scene awaiting the arrival of National Grid crews.

Pembroke Central School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education.  Now in its 23rd year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, Pembroke Central School District answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

“Our K-12 music department and the consistent quality of vocal and instrumental instruction it has provided to our young Dragons has been nothing short of amazing!” said Superintendent Matthew Calderón. “Receiving this designation for three years in a row is no surprise to me and will have an ongoing positive impact on the district’s music education program.”

Since the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in 2015 and a stated emphasis on a well-rounded education, many school districts have re-committed to music and arts education programs. During the pandemic, music and arts programs were a vital component to keeping students engaged in school. ESSA provides designated funding for well-rounded educational opportunities through Title IV Part A Student Academic Success and Achievement grants. NAMM Foundation research has revealed that these grants are being widely used by school districts to address instructional gaps in access to music and arts education. 

Research into music education continues to demonstrate educational/cognitive and social skill benefits for children who make music: After two years of music education, researchers found that participants showed more substantial improvements in how the brain processes speech and reading scores than their less-involved peers and that students who are involved in music are not only more likely to graduate high school, but also to attend college as well. Everyday listening skills are stronger in musically trained children than in those without music training. Significantly, listening skills are closely tied to the ability to: perceive speech in a noisy background, pay attention, and keep sounds in memory. Later in life, individuals who took music lessons as children show stronger neural processing of sound: young adults and even older adults who have not played an instrument for up to 50 years show enhanced neural processing compared to their peers. Not to mention, social benefits include conflict resolution, teamwork skills, and how to give and receive constructive criticism.

A pickup truck and a semi-truck have collided on the Thruway in the area of mile marker 400.7, in Pembroke.

There are possibly two injuries, a head injury and an arm injury.

The pickup truck came to rest in the woods.  The semi-truck is off the roadway.

Traffic is not blocked.

Pembroke and Indian Falls fire departments responding along with Mercy EMS.

UPDATE 4:39 p.m.: Two ambulances required. One injury is minor.  There is a person in the pickup truck being evaluated.

UPDATE 5:47 p.m.: Pembroke and Indian Falls back in service.

On April 11th, the Genesee County Health Department Weights and Measures Department received a complaint from a customer that purchased fuel from the TA Travel Center (8420 Alleghany Road) in Corfu, NY on April 6, 2022. After purchasing fuel, the car sustained damaged due to a high level of water in the fuel.  

After further investigation by Weights and Measures, the TA Travel Center received a similar complaint on April 6, 2022 and completed an investigation. They found that there was water in the fuel tank above the New York State limit and the establishment immediately discontinued pulling fuel from the problem tank on April 7, 2022.

Customers are asked to contact the TA Travel Center at 585-599-4577 and to select option 4 if they purchased regular (87 octane) or mid-grade (89 octane) fuel at this station from April 6-7, 2022 and your vehicle required repairs. Proof of purchase and vehicle repair is needed to file the claim.

Tyrone Nathan Thigpen, Sr., 44, of Summit Street, Batavia, is charged with aggravated family offense, endangering the welfare of a child, menacing 2nd, and criminal possession of a weapon 4th.  Thigpen was charged after allegedly displaying a rifle during a disturbance in the presence of a woman and her children while on Batavia Elba Townline Road, Batavia, at 3:15 p.m., April 3. Thigpen was arraigned in Town of Batavia Court and ordered held without bail.

Mohammad Imran Nasir, 48, of Grandview Drive, Amherst, is charged with possessing 30,000 or more untaxed cigarettes for the purpose of sales and failure to signal a lane change.  Nasir was stopped at 6:53 p.m., March 31, on Route 77 in Pembroke, by Sgt. Andrew Hale.

He was issued an appearance ticket. He is also charged with criminal contempt 2nd for allegedly violating a stay-away order on five different occasions.

Jordan Ellsworth Brodie, 35, of West Bergen Road, Le Roy, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .18 or greater, and driving an uninspected motor vehicle. Brodie was stopped at 2:54 a.m., April 3, on Griswold Road, Le Roy, by Deputy David Moore. He was issued an appearance ticket.

Logan Nathaniel Norcott, 25, of Lockpit Road, Clyde, is charged with criminal contempt 2nd. A person filed a complaint with the Genesee County Sheriff's Office that Norcott violated an order of protection at 7:45 p.m., March 24.  Norcott was taken into custody by the State Police in Wayne County and transferred to GCSO custody. He was arraigned in Town of Batavia Court and released on his own recognizance. 

Alicia K. Urban, 36, of Batavia, is charged with acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17 years old, driving while impaired by drugs, and aggravated DWI with a child in the car. Urban was stopped by State Police at 7:49 p.m., March 29, in the Town of Batavia. She was issued an appearance ticket.

Sarah P. Lytle, 39, of Batavia, is charged with petit larceny. Lytle is accused of stealing in the Town of Batavia at 6 p.m., April 1. She was arrested by State Police. She was released on an appearance ticket. No further details released.

Trevor T. Cook, 31, of Holley, is charged with felony DWAI/Drugs. Cook was stopped by State Police at 3:02 a.m., April 2, in the Tonawanda Indian Territory. He was issued an appearance ticket. No further information released.

Devin J. Manning, 22, of Le Roy, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Manning was arrested by State Police in connection with an incident reported at 4:36 p.m., March 31, in the Town of Le Roy.  He was released on an appearance ticket. No further details were released.

Mercy Flight is landing at the Pembroke Fire Hall, responding to a burn-victim call in the area of 8600 South lake Road.

The victim is described as a man in his mid-50s with first and second-degree burns to his face, hands, and check from a fuel fire.

The fire is out.

The patient is conscious and breathing.

UPDATE 1:04 p.m.: Mercy Flight is airborne in route to ECMC. Pembroke Fire is back in service.

Kerwin Eric Ransom, 58, of Genesee Street, Pembroke, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child and harassment 2nd. Ransom is accused of pushing a pre-teen child. He was arraigned in Town of Pembroke Court, issued an order of protection, and released.

Tina Marie Baase, 59, of Hamlin, is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .18 or greater, and moving from lane unsafely. Baase was stopped at 9:34 p.m., March 26, on Route 98 in Batavia, by Deputy Jeremiah Gechell. Baase allegedly failed a field sobriety test. She was issued an appearance ticket.

Jessica Jean Easton, 38, of Easton Road, Esperance, is charged with DWI and driving with a BAC of.18 or greater. Easton was stopped at 8:50 p.m., March 26, on Gillate Road, Alexander, by Deputy Morgan Ewart. Easton was released on an appearance ticket.

Sierra Nicole Biegasiewicz, 31, of Ross Street, Batavia, is charged with petit larceny. Biegasiewicz is accused of shoplifting at Walmart. She was released on an appearance ticket.

J&R Fancher Property Holdings LLC plans to build a 52,332 sq. ft. facility in the town of Pembroke business park. The warehouse will include a 45,000 sq. ft. pre-engineered steel warehouse building with 7,332 sq. ft. office space.

This project will create four full-time positions and generate an estimated $9 in economic activity for every $1 of public investment. The project requested approximately $900,000 in sales, mortgage, and property tax exemptions.

A public hearing on the proposed project was held on March 21 in the town of Pembroke.

Located less than a mile from Interstate 90 Exit 48-A at State Highways 5 and 77, the Buffalo East Tech Park has previously enabled the construction of facilities for Yancey’s Fancy and Professional Turf Services.

Michael Alan Jones, 24, of Welford Road, Charlotte, N.C., is charged with criminal possession of an assault weapon 3rd, criminal possession of a weapon 3rd (ammunition feeding device), unsafe turn, number plate violation, driving an unregistered vehicle on a highway. During a traffic stop at 4:36 p.m., March 19, on School Road, Le Roy, by Deputy Kenneth Quackenbush, Jones was allegedly found in possession of an AR-15 rifle. He was arraigned in Town of Le Roy Court. He is scheduled to appear again on April 21.  Deputy Nicholas Charmoun assisted in the investigation.

Krystle Denise Sanders, 37, of East Avenue, Batavia, is charged with petit larceny.  Sanders is accused of shoplifting from Walmart at 10:43 a.m., March 18.  She was released on an appearance ticket.

Katherine Frances Foels, 36, of Elm Street, Attica, is charged with petit larceny. Foels is accused of shoplifting from a store on Veterans Memorial Drive in Batavia. The name and address of the store were withheld from the press release. Foels was released on an appearance ticket.

Adam Eugene Bortle, 38, of Lackawanna Street, Wayland, is charged with promoting prison contraband and three counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance. Bortle was transported to the Genesee County Jail after being arrested on a warrant. He reportedly denied possessing any narcotics or other contraband.  He was allegedly found in possession of controlled substances during a search.  He was held until arraignment at a later date.

Ryan Thomas O'Connor, 37, of Center Street, East Aurora, is charged with DWI, driving left of pavement markings, and moving from lane unsafely.  O'Connor was stopped on Route 77 in Pembroke at 10:59 p.m., March 19, by Deputy Trevor Sherwood. He was issued an appearance ticket.

Anthony Daniel Micucci, 27, of Darien Alexander Townline Road, Alexander, is charged with escape 2nd.  Micucci was reportedly arrested on a warrant and while entering Town of Pembroke Court at 3:45 p.m, March 12, Micucci allegedly escaped from custody by running from law enforcement. He was taken into custody by Deputy Kevin McCarthy after a foot pursuit. He is also charged with three counts of criminal contempt 1st for allegedly violating an order of protection by calling the protected party in a complete stay-away order.  He was issued an appearance ticket.

David Michael Martin, 61, of West 6th Avenue, San Manuel, Arizona, is charged with bail jumping second.  Martin was arrested in Arizona and extradited to New York after allegedly failing to appear in Genesee County Court on a grand larceny 3rd charge.  He was arraigned in County Court and ordered held on $5,000 bail.

Sean G. Johnston, no age or residence provided, is charged with assault 3rd. Johnston was charged following an investigation by Le Roy PD into a disturbance at an apartment building in the Village of Le Roy.  No date or time for the disturbance provided. Johnson was issued an appearance ticket.

Cyle Hindle, no age or residence provided, is charged with felony DWI, aggravated unlicensed operation 1st, and driving with unsafe tires. Hindle was stopped by Le Roy PD at a time and date and location not specified in the release. He was issued an appearance ticket.

Brian M. Raphael, 33, of Batavia, is c charged with petit larceny. Raphael is accused of taking a package delivered by Amazon from the porch of a residence on Summit Street on March 11 at 12:01 p.m. Raphael was allegedly found with the package by Batavia PD after the resident was notified by Amazon that the package had been delivered.  He was issued an appearance ticket.

Brooke M. Davis, 29, of Medina, was arrested on a warrant. Davis is accused of failing to appear for a court appearance in the Town of Batavia. Davis was arraigned in Town of Batavia Court and released on her own recognizance.

Leroy M. Stafford, 41, of Basom, is charged with felony DWI, aggravated unlicensed operation 1st, and driving without an interlock device. Stafford was stopped by State Police at 8:54 p.m., March 20, in the City of Niagara Falls. He was released on an appearance ticket.

Steven A. Wasielewski, 38, of Pembroke, is charged with criminal obstruction of breathing. Wasielewski was arrested by State Police in connection with an incident reported at 12:21 p.m., March 20, in the Town of Pembroke. He was released on an appearance ticket. No further information released.

Pembroke boys had an explosive second half to defeat Pavilion 68-45 in section five class C2 quarterfinal last evening.

• Junior captain Cayden Pfalzer led Pembroke with 23 points
• Guards Jon Suro scored 14 points including eight free throws and two three-pointers, Tyson Totten scored 13, Avery Ferreira scored 10 points.
• Zack Tillotson scored five three-point buckets and three free throws for Pavilion.

Pembroke #3 seed now 15-6 will play #2 Oakfield-Alabama this Monday, at a time and site to be determined
