Video: Jim Sunser talks about expansion plans at GCC

By Howard B. Owens

With state funding announced and a county-backed bond approved, Genesee Community College is just $3 million away from funding sufficient to build a new student success center and a wellness and event center.

The $25 million expansion project is backed by more than $10 million from the state and a commitment by the county to back more than $9 million in bonds.

The Genesee Community College Foundation will host a fundraising kickoff from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the campus.

In the video, College President Jim Sunser talks about the twin building projects.

Below is a video produced by GCC.

Hey, I'm needing to expand and install a concrete floor in my out building, does anyone mind if I divert some of the 10 million dollars guaranteed by the state?
My property value will increase thus property and school tax will increase, seems like a win-win to me....You taxpayers are the best. thank you..

hahaha...... 5 negative votes..... I don't want to finance that college any more than you want to finance my out building.....
I'm trying to create jobs and at the same time increase property tax ... come on now let's get to some positive votes. haha I am so stupid. Maybe I'll just give my paycheck to your government and they can decide how it gets spent.

Public financing of public education is a common good beneficial to all.

Sorry, David... The negatives were not making the foolish equivalency you claim - they were denoting the foolishness of your statement.

The county has to go 9 million in debt..That is all us taxpayers..On top of the 500,000 dollars a year the county hands out to GCC. I thought the only school taxes i paid were to the city of batavia school district.Looks like we all have to pay taxes to support GCC also......Lets not forget the 4 million in debt we the county tax payer are on the hook for the county airports new terminal that nobody wants.....We also hand out 215,000 dollars to the GCEDC so that Steve Hyde can still receive his 219,000 dollar salary.....We the taxpayer also just funded a study to tell us we don't pay our management personal enough....Can't wait to see what that will cost us.......What is wrong with this county legislature....All they do is spend money like it is going out of style.....Talk about an out of touch legislature....

exactly Tim, my statement was meant to be ridiculous. I was playing with sarcasm. I know that no one cares about my property and assets unless I improve them with my money and labor. Once I do improve my living situation I have to pay more tax in order to keep it.
I don't care about the college expanding, I don't care about the airport expansion, how ever the people who take my hard earned money just piss it away. I can not be the only property owner to harbor these feelings. If that college or that airport can't pay for themselves, burn them down and plant some trees.
