Truck drivers get special enforcement attention from Batavia Police

By Howard B. Owens

A total of 36 tickets were issued to 11 drivers of commercial vehicles during a check point set up on Route 98 near the Thruway entrance on June 23, Batavia Police announced.

Besides the citations, two trucks were taken out of service until necessary repairs could be made.

The city's enforcement effort was funded through a Selective Enforcement Program grant through the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee.

The police department said such enforcement details will continue throughout the summer and fall.

It's intimidation, William. They focus on certain things and catch the ones who are going to operate outside the law irregardless and would get nailed by a routine inspection. The fines for commercial trucks are much higher than the general public's automobiles, so it forces the already safe and compliant companies and truckers to be extra careful, because they will occasionally get someone who is technically outside the rules but not necessarily unsafe. Which on the surface seems like a good thing, except it doesn't actually make the roads safer. There will always be outlaws and those who don't care about safety. Your tax dollars not well spent, and the costs of trucking go even higher which is passed on to the consumer. Remember if you wear it, eat it, drink it or type on it, it was in a truck or trailer at some point.

The State Troopers have road blocks down at Hanson's in Pavilion every so often. I'd say several times/year. Have seen quite a few of the trucks parked out back by the Town building. Some even overnight. Never hear of any tickets issued etc. Seems like they catch quite a few...

Of course, Rt. 63 ~ the "wonderful" truck route. It's no wonder I can't hear myself think. Lots of noise. Sigh.

Maybe they can sit in the old Ponderosa lot in Batavia by the "Y" at the monument. I'm surprised a serious accident hasn't occured there yet or more often. A lot of them canadian plated trucks. They run the light while doing 40-45.

You know what's scary? Sitting in the far left turn lane on Ellicott headed to West Main Street and seeing a huge semi truck barreling down the road toward you to make a swift right-hand turn onto Ellicott. It is heading right at you before it swerves, and you hold your breath. Probably doesn't help that I drive a little Scion hatchback.
