Doing 2 or 3 hours of work a week does not qualify as a job. The positions should be volunteer. Stop making stupid decisions...(s-curve)(Median)(Round about)(1 lane not 2)(pretty bricks on main st that will be destroyed by frost wedging in 5 years)(bike lane)(really stupid ordinances) ffs...

You made me put a railing on my porch steps...ffs if my 6 stairs look dangerous to you, STAY OFF THEM, THEY ARE MINE!!

One more thing, why are people that have NO children forced to pay school tax of ~800 a year?

-Because the children are our future.

I don't have kids in school anymore, but in general, I support taxes for schools. I might not agree with the tax rate or what the money is spent on or how it is spent, but public education is a social benefit. I also think people who send their kids to private schools (like St. Joe's) should get a rebate.

Let's stick to topic.
I totally agree with the members being voluntary...BUT
they also have to be well informed and level headed. That criteria alone is enough to boot a few of them to the curb. Case in point, the rediculous comments made by Mr. Cippalone and Ms. Christian concerning the gun ban. The thought of considering the a company baased out of state to pick up the trash. THE ROUND-A-BOUT, restructuring of the police department... need I go on??? I know it can be a tough job at times but please.. enough already! OH and IMPEACH MOLINO

Rich,
Just to clear a point or two. Council was not paid until about 1984. Starting in the 1970's the nature of local government started to change. The work load of city council members and town boards increased. The City had major difficulties finding anyone who wanted to serve. While the idea of public service for free sounds great, 90% of the readers here will not volunteer to serve even on city committees for free. So the Council voted to start paying to serve. The only one still around from that time is Jim Russell. And after his one term back then, he did not run again for almost 20 years.

The Round-a-bout was a New York State DOT decision.

Guns, police and ARC are all fair game for criticism.

I have to have a bit of a chuckle at those who proclaim "DO IT FOR FREE!". What they just happen to omit is the last 2 words "FOR ME". Also omitted is "because my time is too valuable to bother with doing that job - but you have to do it."

Shoot - I've volunteered to simply be on the Board of my townhouse association, and the amount of work involved is way beyond what anybody thinks it should be. I cannot imagine being on a town board for free, trying to make life better for the folks in the town, only to have any blowhard post rants about how you are incompetent/evil/corrupt/etc. when the blowhard has no clue**.

**I'm not talking about informed debates about what can/should be done differently, or honest criticism about mistakes made.

Howard,
I think that would be a great poll question.

I thought the poll question was about a pay raise for city council, not whether or not they should be paid at
all.
I sure as hell wouldn't do it for free, not with all the criticism, and the second guessing that comes with it.
What's wrong with the round about? I can remember waiting for what seemed like an eternity to get on to Oak from S.Main during rush hour.
Since the round about, I can get onto Oak in seconds. The problem is with drivers who don't know how it works.

I do, Howard, and I say that it should be all volunteer.

Bike lane: Lets make a bike lane for 2% of people. Screw the 98% of people that will get stuck behind a Tractor Trailer all through town, or all the way to T-Town out of town. Fact: The majority of people take a car. Fact: No one rides in the bike lane, they use the sidewalk! Why: because no one in their right mind wants to be that close to the traffic, they like the modicum of safety the curb provides.

Median: With the traffic problem we already created, lets make it more difficult for emergency vehicles to reach their destination. When the project was proposed it was said "the median will be low enough that emergency vehicles will be able to drive over/on it" Then the flower boxes were added! Lets see a sheriff car get over that! lol

Round about: 2 houses have been crashed into since its creation. Why? because they were forced to make the curb angled so Tractor Trailers could drive through/over it. This causes it to act as a RAMP when speeding vehicles hit it. How many houses were hit when it was that nice triangle? Oh yeah btw people, please stop, stopping at the YIELD signs. If there is no other traffic in the circle YOU DONT STOP!

S-Curve: People just go through the bank parking lot now. Making it dangerous for the bank customers. But its fine, dont worry, all those other cars are forced to drive by the park, where our children play....

Mr. Roach: Im glad you have no problem giving YOUR money to other people's children, i however would prefer to spend MY hard earned money, on things that pertain to ME. Hey its cool, lets force thousands of people that dont have kids, who dont want kids, who may not be capable of having kids, to pay for the careless breeding of others. SO make sure you let your kids know that when you and I are old and need caring for, they not only have to care for you, but me as well, and all the others that choose not to have children, or are incapable of having them. Send them to change my diaper, and mow my lawn. Thats the least they can do after I paid ~800 a year for ~50 years of life, for a total of $40,000 towards the education of someone I DONT EVEN KNOW!
