Photos: Today in Genesee County

By Howard B. Owens

Here's three photos from my travels around the county this afternoon. Top, Peaviner Road, Alexander.

An irrigation system on East Road, Batavia.

A barn/shed on Buckley Road, Stafford.

Tyler Hall

The house on the hill (East side of Buckley between Route 5 and Prentice Road) was Roy's house. The above barn was the barn that younger Roy practiced his pitching skills on. The giant tree on the back right portion of the lot is the tree that was fictionally hit by lightening. (The tree is still there) Roy subsequently carved a wooden bat, Wonder Boy, out of the remnants of the Hollywood destroyed tree.

About 1000 feet further north on Buckley, on the SW corner of Buckley and Prentice, is a house where Glenn Close’s character, Iris, lived. Before departing for a tryout in Chicago, Roy Hobbs went to say goodbye to Iris. They met up in the barn, where it’s later implied conceived a baby.

The final scene, with Roy playing catch with his son, was shot in the field running between Buckley and Nilesville Road (behind the above barn).

Now a good portion of the film was done in WNY. I’m 100% that the above is true, but to my knowledge nothing was shot on Sweetland Road.
