Icy conditions reported on Batavia streets

By Howard B. Owens

Roadways in the city are reportedly slick with ice this morning and at least one accident, on Clinton Street, as been reported as a result.

City crews are out and salting roadways now.

The current temperature is 21 degrees.

This is nothing new.
For the life of me, I have no idea how the city determines when the streets need to be salted.
When I woke up this AM it was clear that a dusting of snow had fallen. I was aware (from watching the weather last evening) that temperatures would remain cold.

Now I'm not a Director of Public Works, but I do know that when cars drive on snow covered streets, that it SOMETIMES causes packs that small amount of snow into ICE causing the conditions described in this report.

How difficult is it to make a call THE NIGHT BEFORE and have the crews out at 4 - 5 in the AM so that the streets are salted WHEN THE RESIDENTS WILL BE USING THEM???

As I said....this isn't the first time this has happened and likely won't be the last.

And this is what we get for Ms. Kuzon's $94,384 salary this year. (one third of the city's $1/4 million management team)

Maybe when she backed out of her driveway this AM she might have noticed.....oh wait. She doesn't live in the city does she?

What a joke.

Let me check my crystal ball here......

Next time the streets are salted and the conditions DON'T cause icy conditions, somebody will comment that the city is wasting money on salting for nothing (with the obligatory "of course, why would the Director care about wasting money - she doesn't even live in the city!")
