Hawley calls Thruway Authority dysfunctional after latest scandal

By Howard B. Owens

Press release from Assemblyman Steve Hawley:

“The news today regarding an investigation into employees of the New York State Thruway Authority allegedly using state-provided phones to arrange meetings with prostitutes is disturbing and speaks to the general dysfunction of the department. It’s repulsive to hear about abuses such as these permeating the leadership of such an important state-run organization. Many members of the Assembly have called out the Thruway Authority for failing to produce a financial plan to fund the repair of the Tappan Zee Bridge and keep tolls from skyrocketing and we are still waiting on a plan. Whether using taxpayer-funded resources to facilitate sex crimes or irresponsibly handling the finances of their own agency, the Thruway Authority continues to miserably fail New Yorkers.”

They have no idea how to create a financial plan let alone follow it. I can give you first hand accounts of the waste on the Thruway on any given day, just ridiculous.

i believe many who work for the thru way know how the thruway wastes money..And many of our local officials also do...But because the thruway provides so many patronage jobs .On both dem and reb. sides they keep there mouth shut....

Why doesn't Hawley work on eliminating the NYSTA all together? After all, it was supposed to be a temporary idea, not a life long drain on New Yorkers.

Because the Thruway Authority is not a direct government department or agency, there is not much that Assemblyman Hawley can do. Also, as Assemblyman Hawley is an Assistant Minority Leader for the Republicans, he will also be hampered by the whims of that party. As an aside, I don't always agree with Assemblyman Hawley, but I always admire his dedication to the people of the 139th District. In this case, he may be encumbered by forces that are beyond his control.
