Dog reportedly kills 36 chickens in Alexander

By Howard B. Owens

A resident on Alexander Road near Stroh Road reports that a neighbor's dog has killed 36 of his chickens.

A deputy is responding.

Yeah, Billie. I came across Eaglesmith several years ago. Different.
What with the advent of the internet, in general, and youtube, pandora, and a myriad of others, there's so much out there that nobody knows it all.

Not sure what your music taste is, but here's a couple more. Let me know if you like any of 'em, OK?

Listened to "My Creole Belle." I enjoyed it, but haven't listened to the other one yet.

I like all kinds of music, but very few rap songs. I'll pass on Broadway show tunes, for the most part, and ambient music, electronica, most modern country, and the "hair bands" of the '80s. Howard and I have very eclectic tastes -- Jack White, The Black Keys, OK go, Hank Williams, Led Zeppelin, Big Mama Thornton, Elvis, the high lonesome sound of the Appalachias. Classic symphonic music (me). It just doesn't end.

Anyway, the video blurb says "My Creole Belle" is sung by Taj Mahal, which didn't sound true to my ears. Then at the end of the video, it says sung by Ry Cooder, which makes more sense, because he's real rootsy and raspy.

Ry is all about authenticity and preserving the great sounds that are dying out, such as the landmark album "The Buena Vista Social Club." He helped produce it after learning about the elderly "son" ("sown") musicians of Cuba, who were performing before Fidel Castro came to power and closed his borders. Most are probably dead now. The album came out about 10-12 years ago. It's all in Spanish, but it is beautiful, and the documentary about making the album is a must-see.

Some tunes:

Billie. I'm gonna have to check on that song (My Creole Belle), but I'm pretty sure the singer wasn't Ry Cooder. I have over 60 songs by Taj Mahal, and I think he's singing that one, too.

I don't have that many Cooder songs, but I just don't hear the same (timbre?). But I could be wrong. I'll definitely try my best to find out.

One time, someone I worked with asked me what 'type' of music I was listening to - so I let them put on my earbuds. You should've seen the look on their face. It just happened that at that time I had a group called Huun-Huur-Tu on my player. It's a musical style from Mongolia, and they do what is called 'throat singing'. Not something I could listen to for very long, but I've always been interested to different stuff - and Tuvan throat singing definitely falls into that category.

PS - Tell Howard I'd send him copies of ALL of my polka tunes, but, alas, I have NONE!

Paul Pena was blind and he once won the Tuvan Throat Singing Competition, an unheard of accomplishment -- by an American. I couldn't listen to throat singing long either; it's just one more weird CD in our collection. I use to throat sing as a child but didn't know it was a real musical style. Yea, that's the kind of kid I was.

Yeah, Billie, I ran around the internet checking on Paul Pena (I had never heard of him before Howard mentioned him - a sign of my limited knowledge). There's SO much talent out there.

A couple more cute ones, if you get a chance:
a) "Chevrolet", performed by Jim Kweskin Jug Band - guy promises woman all kinds of 'stuff'' until he finds something that catches her eye - Luv this tune!

and,
b) "Clothes Line Saga" (Bob Dylan song) by The Roches - I liked their version more than Dylan's (personal preference, I guess).

No immigrants in the trunk but OMG, superior sound effects and his picture should be in the dictionary next to "one-man band"! Never heard of this guy before but thanks for the introduction...I learned a lot today!
