BHS student arrested on disorderly conduct charge

By Howard B. Owens

A 17-year-old student was accused of causing a disturbance at Batavia High School earlier this week and as a result was arrested by police.

The youth was allegedly disruptive, yelling and using abusive and obscene language while in the presense of the student body in the cafeteria at lunch.

He was charged with disorderly conduct.

The incident was reported at noon, Tuesday.

The arrest is the first reported at the school this year.

Last year, working with Batavia PD, school officials decided to take a more law enforcement-oriented approach with disruptive behavior, especially fighting. The approach greatly reduced problem incidents at the school, officials said.

Previously: The potential for arrest has dramatically reduced fighting at BHS, school officials say

It's a good way to teach young (near) adults that their actions have consequences. I worry about a kid making a mistake and it haunting him for the rest of his life though.

For a student to be physically attacked by a Administraor and taken from the school in handcuffs. Is a bit more disciplin than needed for a hat.

Physically attacked by an administrator, Bryant? I didn't see anything about that here on thebatavian. Please, tell us more of what you know about this. Or, is it just something you heard?

The boy's mother posted a statement on social media, Batavia Neighborhood Watch (Facebook). The incident lit up that board on Wednesday and Thursday.
There were some who assumed the boy HAD to come from a broken home. Or bad parenting. Others got caught up in the embellished stories coming from the students and demanded the suspension of the Assistant Principal.
Even after the mother's very concise statement, some parents preferred believing their childrens' account as gospel.
The mother made an additional statement in which she disspelled the rumor that she wanted action taken against the Assistant Principal.
This mother is a very special person. .

Teachers use double standards all the time , this a learned from the Admin. Cell phone use is a great example .

Students disagree or call them out on it(freedom of speech ) they get punished .

The disrespect from student to teacher is not entirely the students fault .
There is a level of disrespect that is displayed from teacher to student , with zero consequences to the teacher .Understand these are youth who are told to speak up for their rights but yet they are reprimanded for when they do so.

Send them home if they are out of line but to arrest !That's is foolish and police State .

Before people like Bryant get the whole gossip thing going. Heres the direct quote from the mother on the incident. (Because of Howard's privacy policy I will only use mother's first name in quote....

(This quote is directly from Batavia Neighborhood Watch facebook page and refers to the thread there)

Sara: I have contemplated all day about commenting on this thread and I wasn't going to but I feel like I have to. My son was the one arrested yesterday. He was arrested for disorderly conduct due to language as he DESERVED to be. He was asked several times to remove his hat which IS a rule at BHS. He did take it off and put it back and take it back off again. He was then told by The AP to give the hat to him until the end of the day. My son had taken the hat off and refused to give it to him which then turned into an argument. My son unfortunately has a hot temper and I am sure that he swore probably quite a few times. He was then grabbed by the teacher which unfortunately was hard enough to leave a bruise from the teachers thumb on his upper left arm. I was not called by the school when this happened, I was called by two students who were there and watched it, followed by my son. I have heard from both parties what happened and also what happened from students there and of course every one of them is different. My son WAS at fault and I recognize that. He was arrested and suspended for 5 days and will have to suffer the consequences of his own actions. Whether or not how it was handled was appropriate I guess would be up to each and every one of you as parents had you been in the same situation. The teacher did leave a bruise on my son, however it's a bruise and he will survive. My son is 17 and is responsible for his own actions and that dear parents is my take on it. He was raised very well, I do have other children, and we are doing the best that we can. I appreciate those who know me and my family who have respected me as a mother and fellow parent who may not have had as easy a time as maybe you have, and hopefully if you are lucky never will. Mr. Wilson did call me today and told me that in the future things will be handled differently.

Only mishandling imho, that I see from the school is notification of the mother in a timely manner and the not giving a statement til the gossip wildfire had spread. As the mother pointed out the version the students were spreading was significantly different from what the mother got from her son, administrators and police.

Also for clarity it was an Assistant Principal that dealt with the student, not a teacher.

Hopefully Ed that will clarify things that weren't in the article. in my opinion if the mother feels the way she stated then it's best to let her and the admin, (and police) handle the situation.

All these kids have great stories but can any of them summarize their cases in well-written complete sentences without using U and 2 and :0.

Teachers and administrators have become referees, guardians, care providers for children. When to hell do they have time to teach?

Teach your child respect, rules and consequences and quit your damn belly-aching.
