Big Season needed for the Batavia Muckdogs in 2010
I know its the last week of December and also the year! There is snow on the ground and were tucked between two holidays, Christmas and New Years. We couldn't be any further away from baseball! This is why it's more important now than ever that we think about our Batavia Muckdogs and the upcoming 2010 season.
The Rochester Red Wings have been operating the Muckdogs the last two seasons and have stepped up to the plate and will operate the team again in 2010. I say stepped up to the plate because for two seasons the Wings have lost a lot of money operating the Muckdogs. This is a critical time for our team. The Wings came on board at the last minute a few years ago when we were about to lose our pro team. They really saved our team. If Hollywood was involved, they probably couldn't have written a script any better. 'A Small city franchise since 1939 on the brink of losing its only pro team when a neighboring big city franchise saves the team. Then its a magical year where for the first time in 45 years that small city wins a championship!' It was a magical season, but now after two seasons of operating in the "red" , you have to wonder how much longer the Wings can keep the Muckdogs in Batavia!
I have spoken with several people involved with the Red Wings and they all want this to work in Batavia. This is where I ask you, the citizens of Batavia and Genesee County to step up to the plate and support our only professional franchise. If every business in our area bought just one pair of season tickets, that would be enough to save the team! Just one pair! Its a tax write off for the business and in turn they can use the tickets for their employees and a gift to other businesses they work with.
A summer night at Dwyer Stadium is so much more then a night out at a baseball game. Dwyer stadium is really the only place left in our County that people can gather together in a community atmosphere and visit with old friends while making new ones. I worked for a small business in Batavia on Main st. for years. I used to hear all the time how our community would gather together on a Saturday night on Main st. and visit with old friends while making new ones! Dwyer stadium is our last place like that! I can't tell you how much fun the social aspect is at Dwyer! Also the cost for a family of four sitting together on a summer night outside compared to a night of sitting in the quiet dark movie theater is no contest! The Muckdogs win in price and entertainment every time!
Batavia has had pro ball since 1939. The league we play in was born right here at the Hotel Richmond! Yes it has grown and moved on to bigger markets like Staten Island, Brooklyn and Aberdeen. How cool is it hat Brooklyn comes to Batavia to play pro ball? How cool is it that a parent can bring their kids to a game where they can watch future MLB stars in our own backyard?
There are bigger markets that would jump at the chance of having a pro baseball franchise in their city. We are lucky to still have ours and its up to us, the citizens and businesses of Batavia and Genesee County to hold onto ours! I hope you consider stopping down to Dwyer in the coming month, the first of 2010, to show Rochester and the New York Penn League that were serious about keeping our franchise for many years to come!
Former Batavia Muckdog Jess Todd with Cleveland Indians
It only took Jess Todd a few years to make it from Batavia to St. Louis. He then was traded to the Cleveland Indians. The 2007 Muckdog is now on the same roster as former Muckdog catcher Lou Marson. You just never know how fast their trip will be from the minors to the majors! Be sure to see future MLB players start out their professional careers. There is no better view then watching pro ball at Dwyer stadium. Both 6 game and 8 game packs are on sale now. Also you can even get a 4 game pack (good for any games even 4 single games) along with a Muckdog T-shirt and 2010 Game program for just $25.00. Check out this article on Todd and watch his Indian debut! http://cleveland.indians.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090806&content_id=6285854&vkey=news_cle&fext=.jsp&c_id=cle

Today's Muckdogs on their way to St. Louis and MLB!!!
You never know who might make it to the big leagues from the minors! We have a special place in minor league baseball with the Batavia Muckdogs! There are players starring in the Majors today that played for Batavia in the last ten years! Who might be next? Come on out to Dwyer and see our Muckdogs! Get a foul ball and get it signed by the next Ryan Howard.....hey you never know! Congratulations to Xavier Scruggs who spent last season in Batavia with our Championship team and started the season back in Batavia rehabing an injured elbow. He left last week and was named the Midwest League Player of the week!!! Congrats "X" and thanks for all the great memories!!! Hope to see him in a Cardinal uniform in a few seasons!!!! Here is what MILB.COM wrote about our former Muckdog:
Midwest League
Xavier Scruggs, Quad Cities
.556 (15-27), 6 R, 3 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 16 RBI, 3 BB, 5 SO, 1 SB, 1.185 SLG
Scruggs was moved up from the New York-Penn League on Monday, and he immediately made it clear to the St. Louis brass he could handle the transition. He homered twice and collected four RBIs in his first Midwest League game, and, after doubling and singling on Tuesday, rocketed another longball in a five-RBI game on Wednesday. He plated one run in each of his three games, and on Sunday went yard again during a 5-for-6, four-RBI showing.
Congratulations Kyle Conley and welcome to Batavia!!!! Let's Go Muckdogs!!!
Kyle Conley, Batavia
.458 (11-24), 7 R, 2 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 5 RBI, 5 BB, 6 SO, 1 SB, .958 SLG
After a sub-par July in the Midwest League, Kyle Conley, the Cardinals' seventh-round pick in this year's Draft, used his first week in the New York-Penn League to show what he's capable of. Conley doubled and knocked in a run in his first game and homered and doubled in his second. He homered twice more in his third game, and before the week was over he'd doubled again, stolen a base and scored three more runs.

Looking for Host families for Batavia Muckdogs!
I have volunteered to help find host families for the Batavia Muckdogs this coming season. Were looking for people who live within the city that would be interested in having a player or two stay with them this season. The players would basically be renting a room from you with kitchen and bathroom privledges. If your interested please contact me by email at russsalway@verizon.net The players will be arriving the weekend of June 13th and 14th. I personally have been a host family for five years now and its been a very rewarding experience. Let's not forget we almost lost this team a year ago and we ended up keeping them and winning the NY-Penn league championship! The season starts Friday June 19th with fireworks after the game! Let's fill the stands this season and make it a record breaking year!!! Let's Go Muckdogs!
POETIC JUSTICE! MUCKDOGS ARE IN THE NY-PENN CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
The Batavia Muckdogs just won their playoff series against the Lowell Spinners and now are heading to the championship series against the Jamestown Jammers! What a turn around from a city that was about to lose their long time baseball franchise! The president of the New York Penn League was in town tonight to see Batavia win! Its not over yet, we need the entire community, county and Rochester support to come out this weekend and cheer on our 2008 Batavia Muckdogs! Several fans are heading to Jamestown this Friday for the first game and I expect to see every member of the city council along with a few thousand fans Saturday night at Dwyer Stadium! What a great story for this franchise and this community! Thank you all for your contiunued support and LET'S GO MUCKDOGS!
BATAVIA MUCKDOGS: What a great season...and its still going!
Its been a great season at 299 Dwyer stadium and its not over yet! The Muckdogs have made the post season and can still win their division tonight. The crowd was great last night and so was the game! I hope everyone returns this evening and brings a friend! Let's make some noise tonight and win the division! Who would have even thought last December when the future of this franchise was in real doubt that we would be in the post season? Thanks again to everyone involved and in saving this team and I'm looking forward to seeing the stands packed for the post season!
Lets fill the stands! Bring friends, family and co-workers to the MUCKDOGS
We have come a long ways from city council meetings and searching for ways to save our team! The community needs to come together now for a strong finish with attendance and what better way to come together with a very possible playoff run? I challenge everyone on this site to bring family, friends or co-workers to the remaining games at Dwyer stadium. We have three home games left on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Then the playoffs! Yes the playoffs! Lets fill the stands, make some noise and have some fun at 299 Dwyer! Let's send a message to Rochester thanking them for saving "OUR TEAM" and let them know we will be here for years to come supporting our team! Business owners, buy two tickets to the rest of the games and give them away to your employees. Season ticket holders, bring a friend to the remaining games. Every little bit helps, we have proven that since last December. I will see you there! Thanks Dave, Naomi, Travis, Mollie, Rock, Barb and all of the other great people associated with the Muckdogs! You have done a great job all season with all the obstacles you have hurdled! From the season opener with the rain delay to the end of the season, you have been great! GO DOGS!
