Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand will leave Congress to take the Senate seat vacated by Hillary Clinton, who took the position of Secretary of State in the new administration. News of Gillibrands appointment spread quickly this morning, and most of you have already at least read a little bit about this two-term Democratic Congresswoman. So, what do you think?

All the local Buffalo news stations were showing still pictures of her this morning till I saw Rochester news. They should in Buffalo use an updated photo of her. The Rochester video of her she weighs about 100 pounds more than the Buffalo photos. Hope she doesn`t spend the taxpayers money like she goes through food.

Please define "upstate". I dont think anyone will represent WNY, where we live.

Gabor-Typically defined as "well" north of NYC, usually north of Poughkeepsie. She's from the Albany area.

Bob-I deleted my comment, your not worth my time or energy.

Can anyone else READ? When someone makes a comment about someones appearance, or food consumption in comparison to, well....the budget, I can honestly say that I am really curious what Dan deleted. I am willing to bet it is about as nice as the thoughts I am tempted to put down....but I won't either. What comes out of our mouths is truly a reflection of our intelligence and the kind of person we are.

I believe that Senator Gillibrand will appeal to many here in Genesee County and our rural region. While her district may not be as depressed economically as WNY, it is largely a sprawling rural district with agriculture being the economic driver, much like our area.

I heard her speak in a very casual setting at last spring's Democratic Rural Conference in Saratoga Springs and what I remember most about her was she was approachable and very likable.

From the NY Times coverage of the news conference today:

Lorie,
Funny story: I went to Sen. Gillibrand's webpage to read up on her this morning and got an error message for ten minutes before it finally loaded. Think there's much interest?

Thanks for the link Lorie. After reading that I am very confident that the Governor made a great choice.

One part of Senator Gillibrand's statement that I am especially excited to hear mentioned is high-speed rail. This could be a tremendous shot in the arm to the entire upstate economy and would link upstate to downstate. If this ever went from the conceptual stage to actually becoming a reality it could potentially mean the kind of growth along the New York corridor (which would include our region) like the Erie Canal was to this areas expansion during the mid 1800's.

The upstate congressional caucus headed up by Congresswoman Louise Slaughter also identified high speed rail as a priority.

I plan to give Senator Gillibrand a chance and ask others to do the same. My first impression was brief - I watched only a few moments of the press conference where she was introduced as the person chosen to replace Hillary Clinton at the US Senate on behalf of New Yorkers. She appeared to be very personable, approachable and someone you would expect to live next door. Having viewed her voting record, I am pleased with what a cursory look shows. Certainly, she and I part ways on some issues, but I think that we have more in common than not.
