News roundup: Get rid of your old prescription meds—safely

An "Unwanted Pill Collection" will be held on October 4, from 8:00am to noon at the Pavilion Fire Department on Route 19 for area residents to dispose of their old prescription drugs, according to the Daily News. Anyone from Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming counties can come by to make use of the service. You don't even have to get out of your car. Drive up, drop off the pills, and continue on your way.

Health officials hope that by offering folks the opportunity to safely dispose of old medications—they will be burned in an incinerator—we can keep the drugs from tainting the water supply or getting into the hands of people who should not be taking them.

In other news, the county's Building and Grounds department will now be known as Facilities Management.

Its too bad the meds couldnt be recycled.

I know its not safe and it would take a lot of science but there are many meds that older people take that they pay good money for they are not expired by date.

The patient may pass away and the meds are crazy exspensive.

We recycle lots of things and the flushing of meds does pollute our water supply.

How about a medication buy back promotion like they do with guns ?

I think it sounds more general and when things go wrong its harder to pin point whose to blame.

I wonder if the new title comes with a pay raise.

Unless the change means they are not responsible for building and grounds, just the facilites.

That means the bathroom to me. Facilities.

Dan: The reason given in the "Daily News" was that Facilities Management better described what the department does. Also mentioned was that Buildings and Grounds made them sound too much like a "custodial crew."

I'm pretty sure that the term "Building and Grounds" covers most of what "facilities" does, it means maintaining the land, buildings and structures owned by the county.

I think recycling old med is cool but the pharmaceutical company's would have a negative say in it

yeah, Its still crazy idea but somehow it could work given the right controls.

It happens all the time non legal and unsafe.

I think safety IS the issue. It would take far more work probably end up costing more in the end to re-issue the drugs. By the time each pill was verified as genuine, estimating their age, proving to be un-tampered with, the man hour costs deeming those pills as safe would most likely be higher then buying new ones. All it takes is one tainted or mislabeled pill resulting in serious harm or worse.
