We adopted a male American Short Hair tabby from the shelter just before T'giving and he's been a load of fun. The Genesee County Animal Shelter is a tremendous asset for the community.

I agree they are a great asset. Dogs and Cats need a good loving home. If you dont want to adopt an animal you can still help by donating time, money, or supplies.

In the interest of full disclosure, I admit that I'm not your stereo-typical 'pet' lover. We've got a snapping turtle that we found on the lawn in Elba that pretty much sleeps from the end of October until we turn up the heat in April. We love to watch him eat crayfish and goldfish. Its like having Animal Planet in your own house. Maybe its cruel. Maybe its atavistic. Either way, its cool.
When I say that I love animals, its mostly because of the way they taste. If the cat we adopted pooped anywhere beyond the designated area my son is tasked with cleaning, there'd be a cute cat and a donation left at the Shelter. I'd no sooner pick up cat or dog-doo in a plastic bag than with my teeth.
That being said, there's no reason to mistreat the lesser beings among us. Or to deny them care. Deliberately injuring or denying the most helpless that we run across is deserving of a swift kick. Loike me blesst fether said, "That calico catches more mice in a day than you do in a year."
He had different standards.
