Weather: Heat, humidity and poor air quality

By Howard B. Owens

The Weather Channel has issued an extreme heat alert for Genesee County, and the National Weather Service is warning of diminished air quality.

While the reported high temperature is 92 degrees, the heat index is 96. Humidity is 55 percent.

An air quality alert is in effect until 10 p.m.

The AQI (air quality index) exceeds 100 today, according to the weather service.

The higher the AQI the greater the health concern.

From the alert:

WHEN POLLUTION LEVELS ARE ELEVATED... THE NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH RECOMMENDS THAT INDIVIDUALS CONSIDER LIMITING STRENUOUS OUTDOOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY TO REDUCE THE RISK OF ADVERSE HEALTH EFFECTS. PEOPLE WHO MAY BE ESPECIALLY SENSITIVE TO THE EFFECTS OF ELEVATED LEVELS OF POLLUTANTS INCLUDE THE VERY YOUNG, AND THOSE WITH PRE-EXISTING RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS SUCH AS ASTHMA OR HEART DISEASE. THOSE WITH SYMPTOMS SHOULD CONSIDER CONSULTING THEIR PERSONAL PHYSICIAN.

There was the same alert in effect yesterday and I was baling hay all day.

Though, I'll admit I'm too sore to go at it again today. If I wasn't sore, I would again today without hesitation.

My hats off to Chris. Bailing hay in this weather is a rough job. I remember working at Kistner Concrete Co. in this weather. I Wonder why I was 40 pounds thinner in those days !

I'll never forget two-mile-a-day runs in Texas on 100+ days while in Law Enforcement tech school (only six of us in the entire class completed every single run).

Of course, it was a dry heat.

In Bakersfield, I had a massive amount of yard work to get done when we were preparing to try and sell our place. If I didn't get the work done by 9 a.m., it wasn't getting done that day ... temps reaching 108 every day.

That said, I could really do without the heat.

Thanks Gabor! I am a total parrot head! I think I am the only 27 year old parrot head there is! Either way instead of drinking we took the kids out to the pool! They love the heat! I remember loving the heat when I was little too!
