Steve Hawley talks about trip to Dominican and work of his step-son there

By Howard B. Owens

Several weeks ago, Steve Hawley traveled with his wife Crystal to visit his step-son Tim Rimmer in the Dominican Republic, where Rimmer is doing work for the Peace Corps.

It sounded like a fascinating trip, so I asked Steve if he would sit down for a video interview and talk a little bit about the trip and share some pictures.  It took me some time to get the video put together because of our move and everything else going on.

One of the key projects Tim Rimmer is involved in is building ceramic stoves for families to cook on. The Peace Corps is seeking donations to help with the project. To donate, click here.

i thought doctrinaire conservatives like assemblymen hawley considered government programs like the peace corps to be big government creeping "socialism"? the "s" word makes a good wedge issue scare tactic in the karl rove RNC playbook to derail national health care reform. the american people will not be fooled by attempts to give the store away to the for-profit HMOs whose bottom line is not the health of the american people but rather maximizing shareholder profits at all costs

I don't know Steve's personal position on Peace Corps, but let's just say it's a government program he opposes (again, I have no idea) -- does that mean he shouldn't support his step-son in his efforts? Then you would be jumping on him for insufficient family values.

What a lucky guy, he got to expand his consciousness, times ten, and I can tell it changed his life. Very cool, you can hear joy in his recollections. I really like this.

Great story!

I really enjoyed listening to Steve give his personal account of a lifestyle that is quite different than what most of us will ever know or experience. Who ever thought that getting from point 'A' to point 'B' could run the gamut of extremes.

Kudos to Tim and Annie for serving in the Peace Corp, a great social justice organization that makes such a difference in the lives of folks living in abject poverty. And thank you to Steve Hawley for sharing his experience.
