Road block sign probably warning of police check point

By Howard B. Owens

I've been on Bank Street near the city limits each of the past four days. Friday, this was a normal speed sign as I remember it.  When I saw "road block" Saturday, I didn't think much of it. Then I did the blotter report this morning and realized that the Batavia Police Department was running a DWI check point on Bank Street Friday evening.  It looks like somebody tried to warn drivers.

Interesting. My husband and I had dinner at Main Street Pizza on Friday night and decided to take the more scenic back roads home. We drove upon this road block and my husband asked the officer (as we had our turn to be looked over)if they were looking for someone. I don't think the officer appreciated the question, but it did seem like an odd road to have a check point and it was a natural curiosity. I've always seen them set up more on the main drags. I thought it was the sheriff's department, but it may have been the Batavia police.

I think its great. They should have check points on every road coming in and out of city/town. Thats sort of how they do it in other countries but they are not exactly the police force. You are bound to find someone breaking the law. If its someone impportant then it will make the news and the police will get an honorary reward. I think they should have K-9 dog patrols on foot and set up "sniff" points at heavily traveled pedestrian areas. I say fine and arrest everyone and crime will disappear. Whom ever is left then raise their taxes to pay for everyone in jail !

I have no problem at all with the checkpoints. We were just thinking that maybe there was a fugitive, an escapee or someone on the lamb.

I think that Genesee County was actually one of the first to enact the checkpoints back in the early 80's.

Main reason I posted this is because I wonder if the police know there was a warning sign.

The other day, driving down 33 a truck flashed his headlights at me. I checked my gauge and I was doing 50 or 55, which I think is the speed limit on that stretch, so I wasn't too concerned, but sure enough, Sherrif's patrol unit hiding in the weeds up ahead.

I find people warn each other about cop activity all the time -- wonder what the cops think of that.

It is proven that people that are pulled over or flagged at check points are guilty of at least one minor violation. When you are pulled over for a violation the officer is looking to write three tickets. Besides, by the time they pull you over they already ran your tags. (inside information). If I wanted to stop DWI i would first stake out the bars and observe traffic at closing. I never seen anyone pulled over for the bass music that pounds my windows at nite.
I am just saying.

I would do this myself. I see nothing wrong with alerting people that the police are hoping to destroy their life just a quarter of a mile down the road. It's the right thing to do. A real drunk will ignore the warning anyway and run right into their trap. In Williamson County Texas the police go into the bars and arrest people for being drunk. That's why I say you have to draw the line somewhere.

I constantly flash my lights at other drivers when there's a cop camped out on Seven Springs. It's double solid lined road that's posted at 40, which not many people seem to pay attention to. I've seen other drivers pass people following the speed limit on that road.

If your not breaking the law, then you have nothing to worry about. The check points are designed to monitor inspection stickers, car seats, seat belts, and drivers. I don't see a problem with law inforcement, as they are just doing the job we pay them for. Check points are very important, in MY OPINION...

(Chorus) Breaking the law, breaking the law. Breaking the law, breaking the law.
-Judith Priest.
I like it when they make new laws because that means that I get to break new laws. Discreetly, of course.
The goal of government is to make everyone a criminal so they can arrest you anytime they want to. I learned that when I was 12 and got busted for skateboarding down Ellicot Avenue (new law) I got to see Louie Snell (Youth Officer in the 60's) three times that year. Good old Louie, he showed us all kinds of cool weapons he had stolen from kids. "It's the law!" Yeah, right. So was prohibition, that worked out well didn't it?
