Man hit by car on Center Street

By Howard B. Owens

UPDATE 11 a.m.

A 61-year-old Rochester man was hit by a car at about 8 a.m. on Center Street, Batavia.

The driver of the car said he was looking further up the road and just didn't see the man until it was too late.

The man was walking diagonally across Center Street with his back to the northbound car.

"The driver just didn't see the pedestrian," said Sgt. Robert Yaeger, who added that visibility was a little lower at the time of the accident. "It's just one of those things. It's an unfortunate accident."

No citations were issued, though the accident remains under investigation.

Injured was Paul H. Wypych, of Rockingham Drive, Rochester. The driver is identified as Dennis A. Weibel, of Route 38, Castile.

Wypych was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital, where at 11 a.m. he was still being evaluated.

His shoe probably flew off as a result of the impact of the collision of his body with the vehicle and I doubt there was joy at the scene, least of all for the poor victim.

Jason, I am astute enough to know you are being sarcastic, it's just that in this situation when someone is injured, I think sarcasm is in bad taste. And by the by, the internet is teeming with sarcasm.

I totally agree Billie. In something like this, where someone was injured, it's not a joking matter. An injured person, in any accident may have to live with the results for the rest of their life and it can effect a whole family also.

I didn't make the original joke...for the record. I hope the injured party makes out ok, I don't think a comment made in jest about his shoe was necessarily in bad taste though.

its a joke by dane cook about seeing a guy get hit by a car and playing it off like nothing happened. the explination for his shoes flying was "i kicked them off in a fit of joy" Isaw the shoe and couldnt resist. if it was me and my shoe went flying that would be the 1st thing i said

While I don't necessarily appreciate your attack of my character, I will agree that my sense of good taste may very from others'.

Laughter is the best medicine, IMO, and if I were in the hospital from the same accident and someone brought me that picture and made the same comment, I would laugh as hard as I was able.

The difference, just so you know, both Jasons; Dane Cook is a professional comedian, he most likely did not see someone get hit by a car, he probably made it up. That's what he gets paid to do, he's very good at it that's why he gets paid so well. The bad taste is making a joke about an actual injured person. grow up

I've been able to laugh at myself in spite of injuries before, I have no reason to think that wouldn't continue.

I hear what you're saying though.

First of all, I really hope the man who was accidentally hit by the car in Batavia is okay. Secondly, I never heard of Dane Cook before and now am a big fan. Funny stuff, funny stuff. Good times.

as for Dane Cook, I had never heard of him before and now I think he is an ass, the bit was simply not funny.
I hope the dude that was hit on Center St. is ok.

Jason(s),

To everyone, I would simply reply: "blah blah blah"...lol..a lot of people on here take such offense!! I love it!! What a way to get em goin!

I think it's awesome that you wrote exactly what came to mind. I know it doesn't make you a terrible human being to make such a comment; especially because it was referencing some original, comedic material.

It's not that I make a habit out of laughing at other peoples terrible misfortunes...it's that I hate it when others are attacked for their "free" expressions!!

yeah yeah...what if it were me? What if it were my family member? Then of course it would suck and I would be upset to be going through such tragedy; however, I do believe that none of us have any actual ties to either victim involved.

"Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong."

I do believe that there is a time and a place for everything. I don't think people are attacking someone's freedom of expression here, it is more to the point of when. You would not walk into a wake full of grieving family members and cryout, "It's so quiet, Did somebody die in here?"
