Why are surveillance cams always placed too high? The quality of this cam photo seems to be higher than most but it's still grainy. If it were placed inconspicuously at chest and head level, we'd get a better view of the suspect's face.

I work on computers every day and have been building/repairing them for 13 years. Technology has become dirt cheap. A terabyte drive can be had for well under $100 so digital storage of surveillance images and video from multiple sources (cameras) is highly affordable.

A computer capable of handling digital multimedia streams from multiple sources is also on the cheap. Cameras and a capture card can also be purchased inexpensively.

I'm sure someone will recognize this male's clothing, hat and walking stance/body build. Being able to CLEARLY see his face would be ideal.

I work at Xerox and a few years ago a man robbed the Xerox credit union on the Webster campus and killed a man in the process. Every surveillance camera shot of the suspect was from up high and not down low enough to get frontal and side views of the facial profile. To this date, nobody has been arrested for the crime.

Just my 2 cents worth on video surveillance. It's a peeve of mine every time I see publicly released surveillance images.

Yeah, it would be great if it was better positioned to catch the guy's face. And these days the image quality should be better.

But even with what this shows, it is amazing how recognizable someone is to another person who really knows him.

That's why I showed the full body shot -- when you know somebody, just the way they walk, how they wear their clothes, tilt their hat, etc., is recognizable to you.
