I don't know the situation of this accident but most of the time here in Batavia the bicyclist do NOT stop at stop signs or red lights they ride on the sidewalks and just keep on going and when the traffic is heavy sometimes its hard to see when your turning that a bike is coming full speed down the sidewalk.

I agree, Deborah. I hit a teen on a bicycle under those exact circumstances. Luckily, he only had a bent wheel and I had a big dent in my hood. There was no reason for him to be riding full tilt on the sidewalk.

I also had a near-miss with a young boy riding his bike yesterday afternoon. As I was returning home from a trip to Home Depot, I was making a left turn onto west main street from Oak street (heading east). A young lad decided it was a good idea to ride his bicycle southbound across west main street on the east side of Oak street. Since he was traveling in the same direction as I was, I never saw him until I was well into my turn, I had to brake hard to avoid squashing him under a 3/4 ton diesel pickup. So, not only was he attempting to ride his bike across a street at an intersection, he was doing it from the sidewalk on the wrong side of the street!

Boys and girls, please learn to ride WITH traffic and obey the same rules of the road that registered vehicles have to. Walk your bike across intersections, don't ride them through. Remain visible and make eye contact with other drivers. Don't expect other people to see you even if you have the right of way. Just because you might be in the right, doesn't mean you're going to win a battle with a 2 or 3 ton hunk of metal..mmkay?
