Stabbing on Center Street in the city

By Billie Owens

There is reportedly a fight among three or four people at 15 Center St., the City Church Youth Center. Law enforcement is responding as are medics. One person was stabbed.

UPDATE 8:16 p.m.: A male, age 22 or 23, is being taken to UMMC with a cut on his left cheek that is "longer than it is deep." Also, police call for firefighters to respond to wash away blood on the sidewalk. City Engine 12 is responding.

UPDATE 8:25 p.m.: Engine 12 has accomplished its mission and is back in service.

UPDATE 10:20 p.m. (by Howard): Officer Dan Coffey, tonight's shift commander, said at about 9:30 p.m. that officers were still conducting interviews and "sorting things out." No arrests, and there's no description of a suspect available.

Some on City Council will probably move to close the City Church Center down now. They can't be attracting such problems to the City and have to control everything that happens at the property. Is City Church going to be considered a poor influence in the City now??? I say no, they can't control such problems any more than any business, landlord, or private citizen can control such things as bad as it is. It's a Police matter and hopefully, they will act and someone, the responsible parties, will be held accountable, not City Church as the property owner.

Hey folks,
I was at the Generation Center and witnessed the incident. It did not happen in or near the church facility nor was their any church function in progress at the time. The incident took place closer to the rear of the main street properties.

Also, it is more unfortunate as to what happened to the young man in our city. This is so sad and our prayers are with him.

I am also so proud of our Batavia Police department. They are absolutely some of the very best and I am sure that they will locate and detain the individual that committed this crime.

This incident does not define our great city. We must all continue to be involved and sow seeds that will enhance our living conditions.
