Hot pursuit of speeding motorcyclist

By Billie Owens

Police are in pursuit of a motorcyclist who failed to stop when they attempted a traffic stop. He was on Route 5 headed into the city going 100 mph and allegedly passing vehicles unsafely. He sped through downtown going 80 mph, zoomed into Le Roy and ran the red light at Church Street. Dispatch has notified Livingston County of the incident.

He is described as a black man on a red Honda, registered to an address on Clinton Street in Rochester. He briefly slowed down, which is how they could get the plate information. They have information that the driver is wanted for allegedly committing a felony in Rochester and the bike is reportedly stolen.

He is being followed now by law enforcement in Caledonia.

UPDATE 6:03 p.m.: The dispatch center was notified that the suspect ditched the bike and fled on foot, last seen running through back yards off River Street in the Village of Avon. A K-9 unit is being dispatched to try and apprehend the suspect. Genesee County Sheriff's deputies are also going to that area.

Mary and I stopped to check out the quarry on Gulf road and saw the LeRoy police and Sheriff go flying past the end of Circular Hill Rd on Rt 5. I followed them into Caledonia and gave up the chase when I read on the thebatavian that they were chasing a motorcycle. We decided to come home and have some ice cream instead!

Just as people were dispersing from the duck derby, the policeman on foot patrol commanded the pedestrians to move away from Rt 5 , and ordered the vehicles at the stop light to stay put. We saw the kid crest the hill in an instant, and fly down Main St at a conservative 95 mph, with several City of Batavia police cars, and 2 sheriffs cars hot in pursuit. Very dangerous situation when you had several hundred people milling around that intersection.
Kudos to this young man. He took control, as a good officer should, and made a lasting impression on me. I shook his hand, grateful that nothing ended badly, at least not for us and our festival.
BTW, I immediately told my wife that the bike's probably stolen, they were from Buffalo or Rochester, and they had a reason to run. Bingo

doug....good idea to give up the chase...probably not a good idea to get involved in a police chase...don't think the police would think to fondlley of that either. probably not a good idea to be reading the Batavian while following a police chase either lol.....that is if you were driving

Jeff, I think you read too much into my post. Do you actually think I was trying to keep up with the police at the same speed? There were two of us in the vehicle, also. One for driving and one for checking the thebatavian.com for a news flash which we did see. Thanks for all the fatherly advice, though!

I'll make sure to tell all those news reporters not to attempt to get to get to the scene of the crime for taking pictures. The police might not think too fondly of that! Howard, never, never, never ever attempt to pursue anything you hear on the scanner! The police might not like it...sigh...

Sometimes ya just gotta take a deep breath and say "seriously?"

I thought maybe the police were going to the scene of an accident or to something serious considering the number of police involved and their high rate of speed. I thought I'd get some pictures, but It wasn't until "we, (Mary and I)" found out that they were chasing a motorcycle that we decided trying to locate them was futile. Ice cream sounded better.

There are some grumpy people on here. Mention police and ice cream in the same paragraph and people get all insulted. I thought it was doughnuts that brought out the venom.

Harley's and the people who drive them usually aren't dangerous, they're good stewards of the road, but there might be a case to ban these racing motorcycles for ordinary use.
