Four cars in accident at Daws Corners

By Billie Owens

A four-vehicle accident, with one of them possibly on fire, is reported on Batavia-Elba Townline Road at the intersection of Route 98 (Daws Corners).

Two people are reportedly injured, one of them a woman who is seven-months pregnant.

Elba fire is responding along with Mercy EMS.

The accident is blocking the roadway.

UPDATE (5:30 p.m.): Two women with minor injuries were taken to UMMC, including the pregnant female.

CLARIFICATION (6:10 p.m.): From reader Shannon Laurer: "Actually they took the pregnant female and two males to the hospital! She was a passenger in one vehicle, her mother the driver accompanied her and each of the two males was a driver in the other vehicles involved, the third male driver involved did not need medical assistance."

Thanks, Shannon. Most helpful!

Shannon, I'm so glad you clarified this. Way to go! It's sometimes hard to keep up with all the details when you have back-to-back accidents and multiple scanner calls coming in.

Thanks.

Hasn't this been the 3rd or 4th accident in the past couple weeeks???They should seriously consider making this intersection a 4 way stop-no, wait....they'll do it after there is a multiple fatal involving a tractor trailer........just a matter of time......

Bob, us neighbors on that corner do NOT want a four way stop! The traffic noise is already horrible with the tractor trailers, adding them stopping and there diesel fumes is not wanted. There are several other options that would help that corner but we have been unable to get anyone to listen!

My apologies to any of the family members who may be reading this, I believe their was an accident a few years ago involving a car full of local teenagers and more than one died. There have been serious accidents at that intersection for years. What are the options that you think would help the corner, Shannon?

You are correct Dave, their horrifying journey ended on my lawn against my tree, that is one I was not home for! I do believe it was one death with another changed for life! We believe earlier flashing signage of the stop signs on the townline roads and for stopped/turning traffic on 98 would make more people aware. We have also thought of rumble strips if they could be placed out of ear shot for those living in the area. One other thing is the stobe lights put in the red ends of the lights for extra warning. Alot can also be said for people just using common sense, do you really need to ride along my ditch to pass someone making the turn while never slowing down, also why not try turning on your signal well before your turn, not at the last moment. We on this corner are very open to ideas on how to lessen the accidents! I have lived here just over 16yrs and and can count the deaths on this corner on two hands, that is just wrong!

I drive a lot, both car and truck, and I really like the strobes in the red lights, it gets your attention especially at night. Make sure you come to a complete stop and THEN look both ways. I see so many people come almost to a stop, glance up and hit the gas simultaneously. It's easier than you might think to miss a car coming at 55 mph. Passing on the right when someone is turning left is a pet peeve of mine, I can't tell you how many times I am turning left and a vehicle facing me is also turning left, only to have some idiot come speeding around them on the right. I am pretty sure (not 100%) that passing on the shoulder is illegal, no matter if someone is turning left ahead of you or not. If it isn't illegal, it's surely stupid. People do it all the time. Anyway, you are right Shannon, common sense is the best preventer of accidents.

Four way stop would be an inconvenience-but that is only way to control intersection-a traffic light-you would have people blowing through it. It's quite a congested corner-houses on each corner-I believe it's only a matter of time when one of these accidents will go into a house if nothing is done. They put a 4 way stop at 98 and 31a quite a few years ago-don't hear about many accidents there(granted,it's in Orleans county). It is illegal to pass on right.

When are they going to put a traffic signal up at this intersection. I think since mercy flight and the state troopers are just around the corner this gives them something to do. They wont do any thing to prevent futher accidents. What about public saftey to many people are getting hurt, What happened to "protect and serve!"

Bob & Jon, I welcome you to come sit in my driveway and just observe for a few hours. This dangerous intersection is made that way by the larger percentage of drivers just being plain stupid or lazy. A good amount of these accidents are caused by long time travelers of this intersection, they just plain screwed up and made bad decisions! Honestly a stop light will only make this corner that much more dangerous! I am already outraged at the light they will be putting in at the road to the airport. Coming over that hill towards Batavia will become a straight up horrible hazard! As would be the same scenario here coming from Elba. Maybe if they slowed the traffic from 55 down to 45 that could make a difference but seeing as most are doing 60-65 now, I don't think it will help. I also wonder if an officer sat at this corner "observing" if things might change! Both my driveways are open as is I am sure my neighbor who gets all the unsafe turn arounds in her driveway!

shannon how is having a traffic light going to cause more accidents? Drivers will be able to see the traffic light from more than a half mile away, There are more traffic accidents at stop signs than there are at traffic signals. Batavia has to do the right thing and put up a traffic signal and protect children that are passing through this intersection.

Shannon why dont you move it sounds like you live in a horrible location, who cares that this traffic light will bother you, its the right thing to do.

Its just a matter of time a tractor trailer will go the one of those houses on that corner just like what happened peoria curve on rt 63. We need a traffic light at that location with a strobe light within the signal.
