Local SUNY Potsdam Students Named to President's List

The State University of New York at Potsdam recently named 809 students to the President's List, in recognition of their academic excellence in the Fall 2022 semester. The SUNY Potsdam students were honored for earning top marks by Officer-in-Charge Dr. Philip T. Neisser '79.

To achieve the honor of being on the President's List, each student must have satisfactorily completed 12 numerically-graded semester hours, with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

The students included:

  • Lydia Geiger of Batavia,  whose major is Musical Studies
  • Harmony Parker of Pavilion, whose major is Archaeological Studies
  • Paola Perez Matos of Oakfield, whose major is Psychology
  • Megan Privatera of Le Roy, whose major is Music Education

Elijah Stringham Named to Fall 2022 Dean's List at Stonehill College

Elijah Stringham of East Bethany, a member of the Class of 2025, has been named to the Fall 2022 Dean's List at Stonehill College.

To qualify for the Dean's List, students must have a semester grade point average of 3.50 or better and must have completed successfully all courses for which they were registered.

Three local students make SUNY Canton's President's List

SUNY Canton recognized more than 600 students for earning President's List honors during the fall 2022 semester.

"I take great pride in the academic success of SUNY Canton's students," said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran. "The individuals who've earned a place on the President's List have demonstrated that they can succeed in an exceptionally competitive academic setting."

Dawn Hunter Earns Academic Honors as a Part-Time SUNY Canton Student

Dawn Hunter, a SUNY Canton Legal Studies major from Batavia earned Part-Time Honors during the fall 2022 semester.

"Our part-time students often juggle family and work obligations while excelling at their studies," SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran said. "This is not an easy task. We applaud your commitment to your education."

The college created this recognition for students who earned at least a 3.25 GPA in 6 to 11 credit hours of coursework. Tate Fonda of Batavia receives Dean's Award at Colgate

Tate Fonda, a member of the Colgate University Class of 2025, has earned the spring 2022 Dean's Award for Academic Excellence.

Fonda is a Biology and English major and a graduate of Batavia High School, from Batavia, NY (14020).

Students who receive a term grade point average of 3.3 or higher while completing at least three courses earn the spring 2022 Dean's Award for Academic Excellence.

Le Roy resident Ethan Riggs receives Dean's Award at Colgate

Ethan Riggs, a member of the Colgate University Class of 2025, has earned the spring 2022 Dean's Award with Distinction.

Riggs is a Biochemistry major from Le Roy, and is a graduate of Le Roy Central School.

Le Roy student named to Elmira College Dean's List

Elmira College released its Dean's List for Academic Achievement for the Fall 2022 Term. The Dean's List recognizes full-time undergraduate students who were registered for at least 12 computable credit hours and who earned a term grade point average of 3.6 or higher.

Symposium showcases research by Batavia medical student

On November 18, New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine's (NYITCOM) Fall 2022 Student Research Symposium showcased scientific findings by Batavia medical student Margaret Cecere.

The event, which took place at New York Institute of Technology's Long Island campus (Old Westbury, N.Y.), featured more than 50 student research abstracts. Cecere's abstract was titled, "Use Of Ultrasound As A Supplemental Tool In Cadaver Based Anatomy Teaching."

Brianna Smith of Oakfield participates in Buffalo State's Care Day

Brianna Smith of Oakfield was one of more than 300 students who volunteered on Buffalo State's annual Bengals Dare to Care Day on October 1, 2022. Students volunteered at a variety of community organizations as part of Buffalo State's commitment to community engagement.

Rachael Herold from Pavilion enters SUNY Delhi

Herold is pursuing a degree in Nursing at the college which is located in Delhi, NY.

Kylie Tatarka of Batavia awarded arts scholarship at RIT

Kylie Tatarka, of Batavia, has received a partial scholarship to Rochester Institute of Technology to pursue performing arts in instrumental music.

Tatarka, a graduate of Batavia High School, is a first-year student in the Environmental Science BS program.

Since 2019, more than 1,400 RIT students have received Performing Arts Scholarships, renewable for up to five years, as long as the students stay involved in performing arts. The students come from each of RIT's nine colleges, with the majority from engineering and computer sciences.

RIT President David Munson has said the best students are students who are also involved in performing arts, which allow them to think creatively. The experience also gives students a leg up with prospective employers who seek the best, well-rounded candidates who can think creatively in a variety of situations.

A School of Performing Arts opened this year at RIT to offer non-majors in performing arts more opportunities to continue their performing passions in college.

The opportunities for performing artists continues to grow on the RIT campus with the addition of two new buildings being erected to provide more rehearsal, stage, studio, and theater spaces.

 

Elba resident promoted in National Guard

Major General Ray Shields, the adjutant general for the state of New York, announces the recent promotion of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their capability for additional responsibility and leadership.

Zachary Albright from Elba and assigned to Company D, 3rd Battalion, 126th Aviation Regiment, received a promotion to the rank of private.

Army National Guard promotions are based on overall performance, attitude, leadership ability, and development potential.

These promotions additionally recognize the best-qualified soldiers and attract and retain the highest caliber Citizen Soldiers for a career in the New York Army National Guard.

Byron-Bergen's Yockel earns scholarship

Bryce Yockel of Byron was among over 700 students who earned named scholarships at Baldwin Wallace University this fall. Yockel, a graduate of Byron-Bergen High School, earned the Florence N. Gray Scholarship.

BW has a long history of scholarship support from alumni, faculty, trustees and friends. Over 430 named scholarships provide more than $4.7 million to help students attend, persist and graduate from BW. In addition, they carry on the donors' legacies through the lives of the students who receive their support. The scholarships vary in requirements, with many specifying financial need, a course of study, involvement on campus or a commitment to excellence in a particular field. BW offers a wide range of financial support to its students - more than $52 million for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Ten students from Genesee County receive Key Award from Elmira College

Elmira College recently announced this year's recipients of its annual Key Award. This year's award was given to 761 students across 14 states and Puerto Rico. A tradition that goes back to 1935, the Key Award is presented to outstanding students in their junior year of high school or preparatory school. Those receiving the award included:

This year, the award was given to 761 students across 14 states and Puerto Rico. Recipients receive an $80,000 scholarship over a four-year period, $20,000 per year, upon enrolling at Elmira College.

"This award is given to those who have exhibited their potential to excel academically and serve as leaders," said Charles Lindsay, president of Elmira College. "We hope they will choose to make Elmira College their place."

Speaking to students during the 2022 Key Award Ceremony on August 22, Patrick Gillette, director of admissions said, "We know you are someone who would thrive as a member of the Elmira College campus community, and we want to invest in your success at Elmira College."

Sponsored by the Alumni Association, the Key Award recognizes students for high scholastic achievement, leadership, citizenship, and participation in extracurricular activities.

The more than 120 attending recipients met with Elmira College professors, staff, current students, and athletic coaches; attended information sessions about EC programs; and toured the campus.
